I believe that there is an underlying geometry to the world. The way that circles, squares, triangles, etc. interact is preordained. If I can achieve those relationships in a design, it will be beautiful at it’s core, materials and products become icing on the cake.
It also helps being a bit ADD and a design sponge. I read a lot, I observe a…[Read more]

Awesome, Josiah; thanks for answering my question! I love the idea of EU as you defined it. Now we just need to put our heads together and figure out the approach. Maybe get a symposium going on EU, step 2.

Kris,
There is the Pure Yoga wall project in NYC, but depending on where in MA your project is, conditions will be harsher. And a South facing wall may be the most challenging (I’d prefer the wall to freeze and stay frozen rather than heat and cool daily)

My long reply went poof, maybe for the better.
Tough question and I’m curious to read what others write.
I’m not sure I could really define a single formula I follow–Sometimes the concept just reveals itself and sometimes its a battle and the only thing I can do is walk away and avoid the problem for a couple weeks.
I agree that it’s good to…[Read more]

Wow, thanks for the complement Cody.
I didn’t realize the CSU program wasn’t accredited. I think it will probably develop into a strong program.
Good luck and feel free to ask me if you have any specific questions about Denver. I come from a design-build background as well so I have an idea of where you’re coming from. Talk to you soon..

I like to work with Graphic Reproduction. Although, I am not sure if they are open on the weekends. Bobby would be the best person to contact.
Hope this helps!

One of the most important things I learned in Grad School was to always to design like you are working on a competition. A competition seems to give free reign to move forward with crazy, over-the-top design ideas. You can always take an un-build-able design idea and make it do-able, while maintaining the big idea.
Taking a lame, small idea, and…[Read more]

Whew, a lot of tangential meandering without getting to the core, which reflects the inaugural event pretty well actually! I attended the inaugural event, was excited about both the term and the concept, and curious to know what the urbanist/modernist agenda would be in the hands of a group not necessarily renowned for sustainability. The Koolhaas…[Read more]

I’ll be there and definitely at the Land8 Happy Hour! I’d enjoy a “Tweetup” if I’d managed to “SmartPhoneUp” yet but to date I have not – frankly the speed with which they keep releasing Droids is making it wonderfully difficult to commit to one, but that’s not what we’re talking about – anyway have a great meeting and hope we all manage to catch…[Read more]

I can’t speak to the reputation of UCD in particular as I went to CSU in Fort Collins, but I can tell you a little about the region as I live in Denver and work just outside the city.
I’ve been living along the Front Range for almost ten years from Boulder, to Fort Collins, and now Denver. The lifestyle is tough to beat if you like the mountains…[Read more]

Thanks Andrew. It’s a 13 hour drive from home which is far enough away. It’s currently my number one choice however I am very interested in UCD as well.
Learning new plants is not a big deal to me. I fell in love with Colorados landscaping after reading the book plant driven design.
One thing I’m curious about is what kind of reputation does UCD…[Read more] -

I’d suggest LSU (I have no connection to any of these schools). It is in state tuition for , very highly respected, accredited, and not way out of your element or a huge move for you.

I’ll be in town photographing sites all over the place, but am skipping the meeting. Would love to meet up or if anyone wants to tag along to see some sites, drop me a line. If not a Tweetup, then we’ll see ya at the Happy Hour.

Thanks for the tips! The language is always something I am tweaking, and the action verbs is a good tip that I always seem to forget.
I would love to include more process images, and I am including more on some of the additional 10 sheets I am finishing now, but realistically I just don’t have a lot of it still. Its something I’m not thrilled…[Read more]

As one of the posters on the site alluded, these kind of plans represent failed planning ideas. Just as with an orthogonal grid or streets laid out in the shape of a palm, natural patterns are ignored, treated as if they are not even there. Where are the streams, wetlands, animal migration routes, soils unsuitable for building, street layout for…[Read more]

It kind of bothered me that he used the word biomimicry to describe this, too. I hope people don’t start to think that’s what it really means.
