July 4, 2011 at 8:32 am #164694al fathiParticipantgo ogle chengal and resak. available thru proper channels in dubai. these tropical heavyweights are tolerant to the desert heat and have beautiful features. color and texture change with time. sourcing wise either from asia or africa, ‘legal’ is subjective.

June 24, 2010 at 3:50 pm #169012al fathiParticipantsandra dear, poor u, groping in the dark over terminologies that have been a perennial mystery to those plying their trade in the arab world. i dont have a proper answer to ur Qs, but i will try to highlight something that u may find amusing.
in general, they refer to landscape architects as landscape engineers. so many versions as to the title in arabic.
the term for landscaping is littajmeel al aradhi. the term for engineer is muhandas or as in ur case, a lady engineer is muhandisah. so normally they say this is the engineer for landscaping (haza al muhandisah littajmeel al aradhi)…funny eh?
but i bet others can give a better version of this title and terminology. anybody out there?June 24, 2010 at 6:05 am #169019al fathiParticipanthowdy cowboy, for sure u could never miss antonio gaudi’s signature works. its all over the city. ask any local. park guell is one site u should never miss.

June 15, 2010 at 9:01 am #169117al fathiParticipanttom et al., u have a valid argument especially on the invasive characters of groundcovers in general. but so do others. and as jason pointed out there are those that can be used unrestrained. and personally im sure that groundcovers have their own merits when we take a closer look. to me, some groundcovers are actually good when it comes to retaining slopes and for the purpose changing the microclimate of a given place sans the mowing of turf as in alternative approach.
at the same time however i prefer ‘naked’ ground with just turf or bushes and trees. i embrace this concept for more than 10 yeras already. the advantage of this is reduction in maintenance cost and resources such as water. many developments in water challenged countries nowadays promote water saving as in the UAE thru their ‘estidama’ approach and even newer developments in tropical thailand and malaysia. when planning for saving water for the soft landscape design, groundcovers are the first to go. last, i believe we should start looking differently at how to use groundcovers to the best advantage given the locale that we have.
June 13, 2010 at 12:33 pm #169194al fathiParticipanthi glenn, set urself a timetable. how long u want to do what u’re doing right now until u move to another level (beyond solitary pickup & part time assistant). move slowly but surely. always protect urself with a piece of written aggrement however short it maybe as it’d go a long way to cover ur A#@. worry not too much about the dough. learn to do things ‘right’ first, along the way get some profit to stay afloat and for ur future reserve. when u’re ready, join a firm (full consultancy, design/build) to expand ur outlook. u will know the time when u’re ready to start ur LLC/Inc. the stage is yours.
June 1, 2010 at 4:21 pm #170153al fathiParticipantwhere’s my Schinus molle dude? and the ubiquitous Phoenix dactylifera? and while u’re at it, pls go thru the spelling of some of the plants. imho, quite a few were spelt wrongly which is global phenomena. this is for everybody’s benefit.
May 30, 2010 at 6:47 am #169314al fathiParticipantthere’s nothing criminal about it. unethical, maybe, but even that is debatable.
