SketchUp 15 years, 6 months agoDaniel – You’re work on SketchUp is really remarkable. My opinion on SketchUp has improved as I see how much can be done with it showing realistic conceptual landscape designs. You’re making an impression on the technology in this field.

California Native Plants 15 years, 6 months agoGlenn, and all
True that clients like to see green plants in the summer. Which is why some designers advocate a mix of native (80%) and non-native (20%) plants. The non-natives – which may require some summer water – stay green while the natives go summer brown. -

California Native Plants 15 years, 6 months agoSince many of our native plants go dormant in the summer as a survival technique to dry summers, I’m saying “advantageous for the summer-dry months” as it relates to the clients who prefer to see green plants and leaves still hanging onto their Buckeyes. Alternatively, Juncus, Western Sword Fern, and Iris, for instance, often receive summer water…[Read more]

California Native Plants 15 years, 6 months agoGlenn Do you really need to irrigate these plants that you mention in summer? They are native to N California, and so in a “natural” context do not get any summer water. Why would you need to irrigate them in a cultured situation?

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 15 years, 7 months agoHello Tamera,
Well, As a LEED AP, I can tell you that LEED doesn’t deal with the spaces BETWEEN the buildings on a level that is watershed centric, site planning, soils responsive. LEED does not give points for passive solutions, but favors mechanical solutions. In so many ways, LEED is very narrow, and SSI is very broad. Those are just a few…[Read more] -

Portfolios and Resumes – Design Strategies 15 years, 8 months agoI created my website a few weeks back, just with a taste of my work, I figure if prospective employers/ clients like what they see, they can ask for more.
First attempt at this, any criticism would be helpful. Let me know what you think.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 15 years, 9 months agoJoy, have your Chapter Trustee or President check in with Liz at ASLA national and she can certainly help find appropriate speakers for you. Also, the ASLA Sustainable Design & Development PPN can help guide you as well. We have many talented speakers that can address many different aspects of this topic.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 15 years, 9 months agoMy civil engineer handed me a brochure on the Filterra Bioretention System which appears to be a vault, filled with gravel, sand and a little peat moss that takes in and filters storm water. The vault is topped with a tree grate where you plant a plant from the recommended list provided by Filterra. Has anyone used this system? They recommend that…[Read more]

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 15 years, 9 months agoI agree with Heather about building a track record of using the SSI. It is through application in the real world that tools like the SSI show their strengths and value.
