a cheap slogan, that could be used for advertising our profession? Have you seen the architecture ads that show a screaming woman, and they say something along the lines of “the house is falling apart, everyone is fighting, we need to schedule an appointment for counseling…with an architect”
I really wish ASLA would come up with something like…[Read more]

Claudia Chalfa replied to the topic A simple definition of landscape architecture in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 11 months ago
yeah, that’s pretty similar to the ASLA definition, actually, which is:
Landscape architecture encompasses the analysis, planning, design, management, and stewardship of the natural and built environments. Types of projects include: residential; parks and recreation; monuments; urban design; streetscapes and public spaces; transportation…[Read more]

Claudia Chalfa replied to the topic Landscape Architecture Blogs in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 11 months ago
This is a blog I started a couple of years ago, and although I haven’t added much to it lately, I will be doing so soon. Now that I am working for a planning department there are plenty of new topics surfacing that I would like to discuss. I’d love to hear input and discussion from others about some of the articles already written,…[Read more]

Claudia Chalfa replied to the topic What is "progressive" urbanism? How does it differ from New Urbanism? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 11 months ago
When I think of New Urbanism, I think of TND – traditional being the operative word. Our best example of this in SC would be a development like I’on. Maybe progressive urbanism is more modern? More hip, liberal, throw in any other related words here that imply NON-traditional.
Just a guess.

Claudia Chalfa replied to the topic ASLA needs to market us! in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 6 months ago
My goal here is to educate the general public so that when a project comes into someone’s head…a new development, a new road, whatever…that our profession will join the list of people who are consulted to develop such projects. AT this time the first people to be consulted on any new project are the civil engineers and the architects. Our part…[Read more]

I agree with you, Adam. And I agree with most of the comments here. I think the ASLA would be most suited at this time, as our professional organization, to promoting the profession. A marketing and advertising agency would probably be able to figure out who our best target audience is, and how to communicate the profession to them. I still think,…[Read more]

Claudia Chalfa replied to the topic Graffiti in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 6 months ago
Hi Lev,
Thanks so much for posting your opinions here. I really hope at some point to work with a city and help establish an urban arts program that includes such elements as free walls, temporary or not. I am glad to hear from the source that not all graffiti artists look at these walls as bad, and that some would consider using them. I guess I…[Read more]

I was thinking of a campaign for educating the public about what we do – hopefully it would increase demand for us in areas other than residential design, which is unfortunately what most people think is all that we do. If such a campaign worked, we might need more graduates…I still think this profession is one that will continue to grow, after…[Read more]

Claudia Chalfa replied to the topic Mass Transit Rail in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 9 months ago
Rail is definitely going to become more important in America in the future. Although as someone pointed out we are very spread out here, this is becoming less and less so, particularly on the east and west coasts. As fuel prices continue to go up, and urban areas become more dense, light rail and commuter projects like the one in Charlotte are…[Read more]

I got this picture from a book called “Riverscapes: designing urban embankments”and that was the location credited in the book. So maybe we should write to the publisher and tell them to correct it. Thanks for clarifying..I hope to be able to visit this beach in person soon. 🙂

I think we need a tv commercial. If corn syrup can have a commercial, why can’t we?

Scott, I am signed up to visit a local representative on Wednesday. Hopefully it will go well, this is my first time doing something like this. I’m not scripting it, I am just going to go in and be friendly and tell him my concerns. Wish me luck!

I agree. It’s nice to have a lively debate about these issues, with intelligent people who obviously care about what is going on.
I wonder how many landscape architects and architects are in high enough positions in government to actually discuss these issues with the people who make a difference? I always worry that the only people being…[Read more]

I meant to apologize to David, not Andrew. I had two kids crawling all over me and was trying to run out the door to catch a van and go to a three day charrette for a class trip. So, I typed in the wrong name.
So now it looks like I really do need to apologize to Andrew…Sorry, Andrew!

Claudia Chalfa replied to the topic CALL YOUR SENATOR TODAY!! in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 9 months ago
I’m sorry, Andrew, I didn’t mean to make it personal. I just get a little frustrated sometimes because I think many people out there who are not landscape architects do not understand what we do and why it is important. I can’t talk about this right now because I have to leave on a class trip, but when I get back next week we can discuss this…[Read more]

This article claims that “Clearly, the chart shows that more government spending does not create jobs.”, and makes this point again and again. However, the article is very vague about what exactly entails “government spending”. Does this include military spending? What about tax cuts? Tax cuts cost the government money, too. Are you aware that…[Read more]

Unemployment and Stimulus
By Brian Wesbury on 2.6.09 @ 5:37PM
The strangest thing happened on Friday. It was reported that the U.S. economy lost 600,000 jobs in January and the unemployment rate jumped to 7.6%, but the stock market rallied anyway. Partly, this was because the…[Read more]
