It is and was clear. I’m suggesting that if you are trying to put forth standards to meet for a new professional license, those standards should be things that are valued by those whom are in the best position to need landscape architecture type services. In other words, don’t set standards that are more idealistic and appealing to public image…[Read more]

I sat in a hearing room as part of the civil engineer’s staff with a group of developers and attorneys prior to a hearing where no one was aware that I was an LA. One attorney suggested that an LA should be brought in on the project. That set off a negative clamoring by the developers who did not want “someone turning the project into a “bunny…[Read more]

Registration, in my opinion, should be designed to meet a set of criteria that is valued in the market place so that those looking for people who are identified to meet such a standard can be confident that a registered (licensed, certified, or whatever you want to call it) LA meets that standard.
If there is to be a new standard to be made, it…[Read more] -

I think that LA can contribute to the “free market” just like any other profession. The companies and individuals in the LA profession have to look at what needs there are in the current economy and find a way to be valued by the people with those needs. You supply to an existing demand in a free market.
Coming up with new regulations and r…[Read more] -

We have a very high Brazilian immigrant population on Cape Cod. Many have gone back home, for what it is worth.

These are not abilities that you can make through incentives. The either have the ability or they don’t. If they don’t, it takes years to develop through working with those that do. You don’t have time to develop them, so you either have to find people who have the ability, deal with their lack of ability, or cut back to a manageable size.

Passion is a wonderful thing. Getting work is a wonderful thing. They are not the same thing, although it is beneficial to all when they coexist.
My comment about “shooting” instead of “talking” is related to this. Many of us look at architects doing “landscape architecture” and want them to stop. The question is not how to stop them, but s…[Read more] -

We all have to realize that landscape architecture firms have been getting unsolicited resumes sent to them on almost a daily basis for a few years now. There is little reason to post an ad for employment, so not seeing ads may not be an indicator that hiring is not going on. … it is not an indicator that it is, either.

The basic style pre-dates Lin and was pretty standard Landscape Architecture graphics prior to the computer revolution. I had friends who took his workshop in 1982. The big deal was not the style as it was the standard look. It was the ease and comfort in the technique. That gave people comfort and confidence to acheive pretty much the same look…[Read more]

I appreciate that and my response, although influenced by your post, is based on the number of people who raise the issue from the third person.
My opinion, from a small scale perspective, is that too many people link their own success and constraints to that of the profession as a whole. It really is an industry of individuals and individual f…[Read more] -

Many people want to see landscape architects take a more prominent role. Why is it written from a third person perspective? Is that not an indicator that the expectation is for someone else to do it?
Take it!
As Tuco Rimerez said (“The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” ), if you are going to shoot, shoot. Don’t talk about it. -

Extra money moving around (ie, wealth) is the best thing for environmental projects. When things get tight, it is back to minimizing expenses.

The text style command is:
‘_style
The default will be “standard”. on the right side you’ll see a button “new”. Click it and name your new text. You can see where you can choose the font and size.
Dimension style”
‘_dimstyle
When you modify it to suit your needs, you’ll have to consider if you are scaling your viewports – that can be adjusted i…[Read more] -

I’m not sure how you have your desk top set up. I have it showing the pull down menus rather than the big icons, but here is how to do it.
Use the “format” menu to find “text size”. Open that to select or make the text size that you want to be current in the drawing.
Then access the “dimension style” also under the format menu. Either select o…[Read more] -

I don’t know why people get so wound up about ASLA whether it be negative or positive. I don’t believe that it is widely known outside of the profession. It influences what we, as landscape architects, feel about the profession much more than it does those outside of it as best as I can tell.

ASLA could benefit greatly if Leslie’s third paragraph was broadcast over the PA system of ASLA each morning. Too many people have lost site of what our profession is in favor of trying to gain something by pretending it is in the lead of whatever the latest trend is.

Also market to busy custom home builders. They find that they like an independent design because they can use it to project manage landscape contractors. Try to get them to let you work directly for their clients. Homeowners are better payers, but the builders will get you referals if they are able to benefit by managing the project.

It is not your design skills that will make you or break you. It is your ability to position yourself to be found at the right time by the people who can use you and value what you do.
