Jennifer de Graaf wrote a new post, Interview with an Employer: 6 Tips for your Resume & Portfolio 12 years, 1 month ago
I recently hinted that this post would be a bit different from previous ones. As part of my research for these posts on Land8, I have been asking colleagues for their perspective. Each of them is in the position […]

since you have been writing for three years, it might be time to take some of the older stuff and see if it needs updating and re-doing. I usually think up new things to write about on garden tours and walks around the neighborhood, I write them down and keep a list of issues that delight / bother me. There’s usually something in there I can u…[Read more]

I see that your Issuu portfolio is 31 pages long. Out of curiosity, have you noticed how far do most viewers look?

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic What can be done to improve the ASLA… in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 6 months ago
So many good points have been made so far, I have only a little to add:
When I lived in Texas, I was very involved in my state and local chapters, and I had a great time. Since moving to California, I have not found the same opportunities I enjoyed in Texas, but I was not looking for them, either. I let my ASLA national membership lapse and di…[Read more] -

Chris –
I looked both of them up on Joblink. To me, an internship is a low-paying or unpaid temporary position with the express purpose of helping entry level people gain some experience (and contacts, mentorship, and a letter of recommendation). The MA one requires 4-6 years experience with confidence and the ability to get right to work, ap…[Read more]

First, you are a designer, but I don’t see any images on your resume – so I assume that they don’t get to see any samples of work until/unless they call for an interview? Back in the day, resumes were just type, but I think those days are over (in my humble opinion).
Second, please see this recent thread and this website (written for C…[Read more] -

I don’t think that is true. I’ve been asked to stamp drawings, and have seen my employers do the same.

I have taken the course, I did so when I was an undergrad and felt that it was WELL WORTH IT. If you truly can’t afford it, at least buy the book and take whatever you can when the money is there.

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic A crappy job is better than no job at all….right? How low would you go? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 10 months ago
Having read most of what people are saying in this thread, my gut feeling is that you should start looking for a new job and only when you have one you want to take, “vote with your feet” and leave. IF for some reason you want to stay there, use the new job offer as leverage in your current job to negotiate going back to regular salary or g…[Read more]

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic Salary Question in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
Actually, I disagree. Land8 is not facebook, it is an opportunity to show something about yourself outside your actual portfolio. Treat it as an extension of your resume/portfolio and get over the private information. Nobody on here has any idea what your skill levels are (I tried to look) because they have to be your friends first. I don…[Read more]

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic Salary Question in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
My feeling is that you need experience, and to get over yourself. I don’t mean to be harsh, but why on earth would a company hire you if you tell them that you don’t appreciate and admire their work and would require not to do it OR get more money just to grace them with your presence? If you don’t want to work there, work somewhere else. If yo…[Read more]

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic Politics and Professional Practice – keep it to yourself or wear your heart on your sleeve? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 4 months ago
I never share ideas on politics, religion, or anything else that is polarizing when on the job. I stick strictly to “safe” subjects. My car is unmarked, and on the few occasions when someone at the office has asked me about my views, I’ve simply declined to discuss it in the nicest way I could. Unless it is part of the design program, I don’t see…[Read more]
