Jason, I actually worked on a project in my junior studio very much related to this at the University of Maryland. It was called Fort Circle Park, and the intent was to create a 22 mile greenway connecting all of the existing forts still on NPS property, and showing where NPS should try to acquire more land through some envisioning site design. I am excited to hear more about your progress through this project.

Heather, I disagree. It sounds to me like the contractor pretty clearly overstepped his bounds. He was brought in to a job (by the designer) to do a scope of work…and then talked to the client (behind the designers back) about doing additional work. If the contractor felt that they could do lighting as well..then he shouldhave mentioned that to Cheryl, not to the client.

Dennis, I think this might be the smartest thing that was said in this discussion. Thanks.

Great list Henry! I would suggest getting a couple Willows…I used that color the most by far!

I think you had it right when you said this:

but ultimately it comes down to whether I would prefer to design predominantly indoor or outdoor spaces.

I know a lot of people on here are concerned about the job market, and most of them with good reason, but I think it is very short sited to base a decision on what you want to do with the rest of your life on what you think the job market might look like in 5 years time. I think you should study what you love, and then make it happen!

Now, putting that aside…I would, of course, suggest studying landscape architecture first.

    a) A LA degree will give you a much broader base of knowlege in general, which you could then build upon with an MLA later on

    b) LA is an amazingly diverse profession, giving you a lot of flexibility later on careerwise

    c) LA is fun…I am going to make a generalization here, but I have found this to be true, landscape architects, as individuals, are much more laid back and fun than architects (who doesn’t like fun?)

    d) There are a lot more excuses to get out of the office as an LA than there is as architect.

Now, once again, this is my humble opinion. Eitherway, good luck!

Jason, I actually got the idea for the tree species from Paley Park, however Im trying to show a space closer in size to the actual courtyard in the project. Although Paley Park is small…it’s not quite small enough for this. Thanks though!

    D,

I would recommend going to the conference if you can swing it financially. Over the years I have made some really great contacts at the conference and also been inspired by some of the lectures. As a first year MLA student…it could be a great way to see the breadth of work this field has to offer. However, if money is really an issue, and you had to pick one conference to go to this year…I would suggest waiting until LABash!

LABash is a conference put on by LA Students for LA Students. This year it is going to be at Florida International University in Miami. Here is the link to their group on Land8: http://land8lounge.com/group/fiulabash2012

    Good luck!

This is interesting, because this is not at all the atmosphere I am experiencing here in MD. In just the past year every LA friend I had who was looking for a job has found one. I know 3 companies that just started or broke off other firms (including the one I work for), and I have several friends who just in the past month have changed jobs within the profession. Every landsape contractor I am working with is busy, and we still have more projects coming in from architects than we know what to do with…

Anyone else feeling these same positive indicators in their region as well?

I think saying “most firms” have confidential projects pinned up is a bit of a stretch. I am sure most firms would be glad to show you around. Finding a contact might not be a bad idea though. If you don’t already have a friend working for one of the firms you are interested in…maybe you could find someone through Land8. Good luck!

Ed, there are some good suggestions in this thread: http://land8lounge.com/forum/topics/paris-1

But I am sure there are many more!

Seems like this product by Permloc might be an option:http://www.permaloc.com/products/onyx.html

Also, their aluminum edging has a beaded top that makes them significantly less sharp than steel edging.
