Andrew:
There is a better than strong likelihood that we will never meet in person. So our probable forum will probably remain here. I read this Lounge, not like a lizard, but frequently. I have always appreciated your moderation in comment and insights into the profession, where it is at, where it is not and where it might be headed. I have…[Read more] -

Just add “landscape” before architecture and you have your answer right here.

Hey Maui Bob:
Here is the other 10% you did not buy into with the other 90% that you did.
This investment advice is free of charge this time. If your enlarging your stock portfolio
with more health care related picks, stop doing it now. It would be as foolish as buying
more gold futures right now, but you already know the latter tip.
This is…[Read more] -

Christ Dude ….. if the best you can do is an inane and vapid question like this one, ,,, you
deserve some of the comments coming your way (and these people are being very polite).
Please spare us from the ill-conceived, poorly thought through airhead based questions like this one
from now on ….. -

I would second, even third Earthworkers comments. All the design professions have been hammered from the Great Recession or Reset or Great Desperation, take your pick. There has been a complete seismic shift in our national and global economy. We are in for an ongoing de-leveraging, and downscaling.
Measurable and improved conditions to anything…[Read more] -
landplanner replied to the topic Figuring out Financial Aid for MLA in the forum EDUCATION 12 years, 8 months ago
Here is some hardcore financial advice. Don’t get the MLA. This field is supremely saturated right now with many more grads than jobs and by the time your done, there will be little, noticeable improvement. You will be deeper in debt (you will have some student loans whether you go the economical route at Cal Poly) and struggling to find work. I…[Read more]

Let’s cut through all the fog and veil of what is really going on here.
Hiring managers, are now asking for whateever they can get away with. Superman superlatives aside,
they want the following, and then some:
- a Zen master of design creativity and inspiration in on-going and subservient learning status (as long as it does not interfere, re…

Actually, I did those relatively new to the profession a bit of a service by pointing out to them one far more affordable and easily accessible alternative than the costly online option your self-promoting here.
I have no qualms with the value and utility of your online course, I just find the asking price, far too steep and so would most…[Read more] -

Hey Page:
You need to really get a clue here. It appears your somewhat disconnected from the true reality of the marketplace. Let me be specific, in case you can’t be.
There is massive unemployment in the design professions and thast has been pervasive going on nearly three years. You are offering a “sure-fire” or “near-fire” portfolio and…[Read more] -

Very cogent and informed observations boilerplater. And take that from someone who is over in China and would like nothing more than to be associated with projects like you mention in your posting. The true fact of that matter is, that I have been directly and functionally involved and contributing to those kinds of projects, right here in the…[Read more]

I just saw that “delivery/courier” aberration this morning, If one drills down a bit deeper, then they find convincing anecdotal evidence that this “rosey” reading of last months jobs report is way, way overly optimistic.
Numbers and statistics being what they are, they can be interpreted, shaped and bent depending on the bias of the…[Read more] -

This is why I am avoiding getting any sharp and unwanted blade placed in any of my bodily
orifices. Most of you will not want to read this, but the cold hard facts are exactly that.
Overlook the momentary forth of economic cheerleading, the trough is incredibly deep and the

Hey Keith, your ass must be near hemorraging by now. Just so you know, or don’t want to know,
I have been exactly where you seem to describe yourself now. I took a leave of absence frome overseas to see if I could find a job here back in the States and try to see if a relationship I left here had any longevity to it. Both were hugely mistaken…[Read more] -

Wow, Russell, much better and far rougher rant than my previous posting. I make no apologies for my survivalist instincts kicking in last year and coming to southwestern China. The mothership of the multi-disciplinary, highly architecture dominated firm I am on temporary overseas, expat assignment is actually in Hong Kong, still part of the…[Read more]

I am in complete agreement and support the comments you are offering here in this discussion thread and the other current one. I won’t retract the “pity party for the paltry” statement, because there has been an awful lot of bitching and moaning on this topic for last two years plus. I should know, I contributed my fair share of it.
I too have, a now extended (distance) family to contribute to looking after. That is another major motivator for being where I…[Read more] -

Keith, my boy, you seem to be missing my point. Look elsewhere in the these blogs (the one dealing with someone looking at a a design drafting position) and see what other practicing professionals have to say about how to redefine, reposition and rebrand yourself to overcome or bypass the perceived stigma you think our profession has. I will…[Read more]
