Takkie,
Hmm. Well yes and no. If you are referring to the UCLA A, B, D classes, I think the basic philosophy is somewhat different. UCLA breaks there classes up into one day sessions per section. Ours are lumped together into a 3 day weekend. We spend a lot more time on D because the amount of material is huge.
I send you a brochure by mid-December.

The ABD review class I teach spends about 1.5 days on section D. Next class is January 21-23 in San Francisco area. Plant questions should be general enough so that you can probably do OK with knowing the characteristics of the genus.

I’ve seen it used with mixed success. Where you have very flat slopes and little surface runoff, it seems to be fine. If you get any concentrated flow on it, even at 3-5% slopes it can erode badly. (I’m talking about generic stabilized DG, like 1/4″- with Road Oyl or Stabilizer or any of those products used as a binder.)
If it’s poorly mixed or…[Read more]

Once upon a time, the reference manual had symbols for plants used in planting plan vignettes. These disappeared in 2006. I suspect this is what you may be referring to.
Susannah,
One vignette solution showed a swale constructed entirely in fill adjacent to a road. There was clearly no need for a swale given the existing topo depicted. They also…[Read more]

I’ve looked at SOME of the Section E material from Shake-n-Bake.
It was pretty bad. -

Thanks Charles. The Seattle class had a good group of students. We had a sizable contingent from British Columbia and one person wandered in from Texas! There were many thoughtful questions posed. I enjoyed the experience.

Katrina,
My reviews in the SF Bay Area are not inexpensive, but you get a very intensive introduction to what the performance sections are about, and lots of practice and feedback opportunities.
E-mail me and I’ll send you a PDF brochure. Rayfreeman3@comcast.net

Two points Brandon makes that I would like to reiterate, because they are really important if at first you don’t succeed….
Be really careful about reading the requirements of the vignettes. CLARB places a very high premium on the KSA “Ability to Read, Understand and Follow (precisely) Written Directions”.
Figure out your weaknesses and bring…[Read more]

Congratulations Brandon! It was obviously a real slog, but you kept after it! This is a good lesson for everyone, if you don’t give up and keep working at it, you will pass.

Clayton,
I imagine Ready Set Practice by Bruce Sharky or Guidelines for Professional Practice by Lane Marshall would address this.

Creeks aren’t swimming pools or fountains. The water depth is what it is. There’s no “code” per se.

Blaugh!
Those Hahvahd line weight pen settings are a mess! I much prefer a system that has some logic behind it!
For layers 1-7 we use 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6. However, I think we use mms. Some people use the same pen weights as rapidograph pens (am I dating myself?). To be honest, I’ve gotten used to our system so much I rarely refer…[Read more]

Aurands “Fountains and Pools” is a basic reference.
Your state building code is critical. Over a certain water depth (in California it’s 17.9 inches) a fountain becomes a swimming pool with a whole different level of requirements (like fencing).
A water wall water thickness depends on the roughness of the surface and the effect/sound level you…[Read more]

With regards to the LARE, it’s important to recognize a few “facts of life” with regard to the profession and the exam.
1. Licensing authorities are set up for one reason: to protect the public from individuals doing stuff they shouldn’t be doing…either through malfeasance or lack of competence. The exam reflects that reality.
2. Landscape…[Read more]

Ray Freeman replied to the topic Best way to prep for LARE? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 15 years, 7 months ago
Section E is the most difficult, generally followed by Section C. However, last december the pass rate for C was higher than for D, which was unusual.
The 3 year rule (or 3 fail rule) generally applies only in Jersey or Massachusetts. Don’t think you have a limit in Florida, but obviously you can research this yourself.
In my opinion, you are…[Read more]

Daniel,
Perhaps you took the wrong prep course. 🙂 I offer three (3-day) classes covering the LARE, and have been teaching reviews for 10 years. And I stay CURRENT with the exam (to the extent possible). If you want a brochure, e-mail me at rayfreeman3@comcast.net.
