Both Painter and Sketch Book are solid programs. Just wanted to second that.

To Add to this: When I started out I did the mistake of going the laptop route. If you plan on doing 3d modeling and graphic post-production (even CAD), I would strongly discourage anyone from getting laptops. I built a tower in school and still use it this day. When I was in studio all my classmates used expensive and newest $$mac books$$ only to see their 12 layer Photoshop drawings come to a screeching halt and laptops heat up to lava. Meanwhile, my tower was running complex Rhino models without even a hint of issues while running AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign and GIS all open at the same time. Whenever my classmates walked by they were perplexed as to how I had so many programs running at the same time.

Laptops are not designed to handle heavy processing (unless you go the alienware route and are made of money). If you want to make an investment that pays off well and can handle upgrades over time, towers are your best bet.

Eh. I can’t offer a response without seeing a source chart for that spec comparison 🙂 (but you could say the same about me as well). I came to design from an IT background and that’s where my knowledge is sourced from. You have to take into account other things as well, such as available upgrades and life cycles etc.

There is no reason. 0. to get a mac. On average, the hardware specs for macs cost twice as much as PCs. There was a time when it didn’t matter because you got OSX, but Windows has caught up in my opinion and OSX has stayed mostly the same. I don’t understand why we’re still on the designer/mac bandwagon in 2014. Really look closely at the specs and do a price comparison. I would go with a Dell XPS with a dedicated video card. Vectorworks operates just fine on a pc.

I’d like to know this as well. So far I’ve just been  cold emailing firms with digital portfolios. What are your thoughts so far?
