I hate this one — seems like it will be very disruptive to whatever lives there..I loved “The Gates” however – it was gorgeous…but also don’t like any of his others – the Reichstag, the Umbrella thing, the island wrapping – just hate all of those..
But the Gates – man that was great..Gorgeous orange color, in the grey New York Febuary,…[Read more] -

OK, guys, check out #1745 in the “Entries ” category – this is our own HENRY COHEN with a terrific design that proves what we are all saying, that it takes a Landscape Architect to really see a site properly – this is a great job, and a really nice contrast to that silly mirror…[Read more] -

The rest of the entries are weird, but I do sort of like the ones that make some big sculptural AIDS ribbon – sometimes a sculpture is better than a park, for something complex.. And it looks like a very tough site..Very tough..Perhaps an option would be to say, choose another site, like Olmsted the Great Father did..(sp?)/
But I also wanted to…[Read more] -

looks like a nightmare place for the trees, for starters. and there is something un-imaginative about the mirrors..literal mirrors..
It looks like Ivana Trump’s closet..
so little context, provided, in the design..seems to have nothing to do with the state of the AIDS epidemic, at all…I think there should be someplace for people to contribute…[Read more] -
Trace One replied to the topic What are hiring managers looking for? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 10 months ago
I don’t know, I think you guys are missing a huge element of hiring – people want good looks, enthusiasm, a willingness to work, and the right balance with the rest of the company..and if you look good enough, they won’t notice if you are falling short in other areas..
that is why it is so hard to get hired if you are over fifty…You can’t…[Read more] -

don’t forget the great book – Stairway Walks” in SF, I think the author is Balalinsky or something weird like that – but Stairway gardens, and it’s set up so you can do a great tour – reallly fun, some are famous..

Trace One replied to the topic What to do with parking? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
I’ve found that that is the key with folding bikes and tricycles, Jason – has to be full size..I hate those 22inch wheels..
I was looking at a shimano folding trike on amazon – only $250..
but I love my Sears cycle tote – it has a single nut in the middle, that holds it together – it doesn’t fold as much as turn into two pieces but the design is…[Read more] -

yes, a ‘tadpole’ variety, Roland – I love them..I am also fascinated by different types of bikes – I also have a regular big adult tricycle (Schwinn) and a 1973 Sears Cycle Tote, a really great folding bike design – a lot of folding bike designs are really squirrelly..
I love bike design – next thing I am getting is a step-cycle thing – it’s li…[Read more] -

go for a tricycle, Henry – once you go tricycle, you never go bicycle!

Trace One replied to the topic What to do with parking? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
? why do you ask, roland?
I think using parking lots for alternative spaces is an idea that in the landscape community is at least forty (yes, FORTY) years old, to the extent that it is even codified in many zoning ordinance, sometimes to the extent that parking requirement free zones are overlaid over commercial districts.
so my feeling is, yawn…[Read more] -
Trace One replied to the topic The Unemployment Rate For Landscape Architects/Designers in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
These are the kind of salaries you get in so-called ‘right-to-work’ states, altho Houston is an extreme example.. ..

There is an ad in the ASLA jobs site for a planner for Houston – the pay? $25,000…I think that is an insult.. We are loosing ground, us wage-earners..and the job requires an Masters degree….Ouch!

and they also address ‘feel’ – I am thinking of the required setbacks for tall buidlings in NY, because of a percieved need to present less density for human health.
They also address smell- you can’t’ locate a dump in a residential neighborhood, Southampton even required plans for horse farms to address the placement of the manure pit..
