Planning Profession and Landscape Architecture 17 years, 4 months agoZoning is way to control activities, which is important for a city. But as we all know cities are dynamic, some people even suggest that the city is a living organisim. froming this point of view, “zoing” should work in different ways comparing with exisiting and conventional “zoning” practices.
I think “zoning” is also a tool for the authority to…[Read more] -

Planning Profession and Landscape Architecture 17 years, 4 months agoWell, that wasn’t he part of the quote that I was trying to emphasize, I’m not going to stand here and say that the government has cornered the market on corruption, the argument really isn’t about morality, its about social functions.
You are entitled to your assessment of Jane Jacob’s work but her contribution to urban design theory is…[Read more]

LA in an Engineering World 17 years, 4 months agoGreat group thread….Here are a few of my favorite quotes made to engineers over the years…perhaps you can relate?!
“Rectangular ponds are great….if you’re treating raw sewage”
“Yes, all those trees are necessary…..to hide your handiwork”
“Remember, Jesus was a carpenter because Landscape Architecture wasn’t invented yet..”

Planning Profession and Landscape Architecture 17 years, 4 months agoGood points, I suppose another important distinction to draw as we continue the conversation is that a planner’s role will vary greatly depending on if he or she is employed by a municipality or by a private sector consulting firm.
I suppose what I meant in my earlier post is that I have been impressed by the work of the private sector planners…[Read more]

LA in an Engineering World 17 years, 4 months agoI’ve been working for a landscape contractor for 8 years running, now working for a consultant in Kuala Lumpur, apparently a lot of shit is happening to my projects where engineers seem to over look conservation here in Malaysia.
We’ve got a beautiful climate but a not so beautiful way of managing projects. I heard that in Australia LAs and…[Read more]

Planning Profession and Landscape Architecture 17 years, 4 months agonrschimid,
I know a few LA/Planners. AICP is a cool credential to have behind your name, a good friend of mine (who is a planner) says it stands for “Any Idiot Can Plan”.
Planning is an interesting subject. There are many professions that recognize the importance of good planning in our built environment but we take many different avenues to…[Read more]

BUSINESS HELPS 17 years, 4 months agoMack,
I think Errors and Omissions Insurance is usually a policy that the firm keeps on itself, you may change Insurance companies from time to time but the insurance is usually constant. I don’t believe it is available on a job by job basis.

Can it be obtained on a month to month or by job basis? -

BUSINESS HELPS 17 years, 4 months agoI wanted to add a comment/question.
I have seen serveral diffrent ways to approch contracts and proposals. One way is keep it very simple, the other it to complicate it to the point of needed a harvard law degree to understand the contract.
The questing I have is where is the middle ground? I don’t want to be too simple, miss something and then be…[Read more] -
