Spring is just around the corner, which means that it’s time to start applying for summer landscape architecture internships! We’ve rounded up a list of seven of the best known landscape architecture firms offering paid summer landscape architecture internships for 2014. 1. Sasaki Associates, Inc.
Sasaki is now accepting applications for our paid 2014 summer internship program! The program kicks off with an interdisciplinary design charrette—a unique two-week project that serves as an introduction to the firm and the summer’s class of interns. Interns will then work on current Sasaki projects alongside our architects, landscape architects, planners, urban designers, strategists, civil engineers, and graphic designers. You’ll get hands on experience, develop valuable relationships, and gain a deep understanding of how a leading firm operates and innovates. Our paid summer internship program, which takes place in our Philadelphia studio, teaches and challenges students with hands-on experience in a wide range of projects to facilitate the transition from scholarship to professional practice. The ten-week program, (June 2 – August 8, 2014), is open to graduate and undergraduate students advancing to their final year of study in an accredited program of landscape architecture.

5. Design Workshop
This program is designed to expose students to a collaborative, professional office environment and a team of experienced design professionals. Selected individuals will participate in a 10 week internship in a Design Workshop office, beginning in June. Students will be exposed to both the creative and business environment. Assignments will vary and may include project research, site visits, sketching, computer production, design reviews and assisting on marketing proposals.

6. PWP Landscape Architecture
PWP has a long standing commitment to linking education and practice. Since the inception of the firm, PWP has offered an internship program that provides students an opportunity for immersion into the working environment of a firm committed to built work. The PWP Internship Program allows students to gain exposure to the inner workings of PWP and our team. The students are not the only ones who benefit from the internship experience…the staff welcomes the energy, enthusiasm, and fresh thinking that the students bring to the firm. Every summer, a group of four to eight students are integrated into project teams where they experience all aspects of a project, from concept through construction documents, in order to understand the real world application of their studies.

7. Gustafson Guthrie Nichol
Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) is seeking talented applicants for two paid summer internship positions. The internships are open to current landscape architecture and architecture students, both in the United States and abroad. The GGN internship program will expose the intern to as many facets of modern landscape architectural practice as possible. Interns will work with GGN project teams to produce site plans, renderings, 3D and physical models, AutoCAD drawings and details, and presentations for our current projects. Interns will also gain experience working outside the office, by accompanying project managers on local construction site visits and project team meetings. At the end of the internship, each intern may prepare and give a presentation of their work to the office.

Dear University LA Students:
I’m NOT an Attorney, but, I am familiar with the “Federal Labor Standard Act“. I think it’s GREAT that these TOP LA firms are offering “Summer Internship Jobs“ …however, College Students (and these business OWNERS should be aware) that these jobs MUST be PAID INTERN JOBS……….not UNPAID.
In reading the details about one of the above firms’ Summer Internship Program, it states that the (final 4 weeks would be paid). No, the ENTIRE period that a College Student is working for the firm should be PAID. At least “minimum wage”. Which varies from state to state. From $7.25 to $9.00 per hour (currently).
Oh, I agree working all Summer for AND Landscape Architecture firm will be VERY beneficial to those students……but, ALSO beneficial to those LA firms.
Surely these LA firms can afford to pay all of their Summer Interns MINIMUM WAGE. And, if these students will NOT be a benefit to the LA firm, WHY hire them in the first place?
I was in a Dallas, Texas LA firm for 12 years (as a Senior LA) and we hired PAID SUMMER INTERNS several Summers I was with the firm. It was part of my job to mentor these University LA Students…they learned and they were of great service to our LA firm at the time.
I just read that 50% of College Students (in 2012) were working for companies who were ILLEGALLY not paying these interns. And there are MANY Law Suits pending against companies regarding this matter.
It would be MY recommendation to every College Student, BEFORE you accept a Summer Internship Job with any LA firm, that you first get an agreement from that firm that you will indeed be paid for every hour you work…the HOURLY RATE and……get it in WRITING.
To the Landscape Architecture Firms…Do the RIGHT thing, PAY these Summer Interns and adhere to the Federal Laws concerning this matter.

We have clarified with the firm you referenced that both the summer program and internship receive a stipend, our apologies this was omitted above. Housing is provided, as well as travel between the LA program and the 7 studios offering internships. Interestingly, this is the 42nd year for them to offer this program.

Thank your for your response concerning my comment about the professional LA firms’ “Student Internship Programs”.
Again, I’m not an attorney…..but, there IS a difference between a “stipend” and a “salary”.
I just read where one major University stopped using “stipend” for compensating students working on their campus…as they believed they were in violation of the FLSA. And, non-profit organizations are different than for profit companies with regards to “stipend” compensation, as I know you are aware.
As long as these firms believe the are FAIRLY compensating University LA Students working for their firms during the Summer…..that’s fine. But, I know if it were me, I wouldn’t want to wait until the end of the Summer to be compensated or reimbursed by these LA firms.
I understand that the “education” these University LA Students will gain from working with very experienced & talented LA’s will greatly benefit them, but, I can only imagine the expenses these students will have for travel to the cities where these firms are located, local housing, food, etc. Even minimum wage would not amount to much more than $1,000.00 per month (after taxes).
OK….I’m just very much an advocate for the “best interests” of these young LA students.

Hi Andrés,
It might depend on the internship, but I know for a fact EDSA does accept international students and I’m willing to guess that most of them are open to international students as long as you can secure the proper U.S. work papers.
If I were you, I’d reach out to the firms for clarification and to your professors to see what students at your school have done in the past to prepare for temporary work in the U.S.
