May I add that the challenge in doing a great glasshouse is finding the right architect.
The tension between horticultural requirements and heating/cooling issues, “green design,” water use, etc. puts us at odds with the architects. Many public glassshouses have been designed by architects who have never done anything like it before. They do not…[Read more]

You might also look at some of the zoos: Randers Rainforest (Denmark) , Burgers Bush (the Netherlands), Masaola Rainforest (ZooZurich) for a different concept. There are fine public glasshouses in Amsterdam, Adelaide, Brussels, Wales, at Kew Gardens…the list is endless. The Gardens By The Bay in Singapore should be amazing when it opens.

Yes.
Three of us were working at a multidisciplinary engineering firm and saw the writing on the wall after four layoffs. We started our own firm in December of ’07. It has been a fun and hard two years, but we have found our niche and developed a sound marketing strategy that has been paying off. Starting from the bottom has its advantages: You…[Read more]

I have designed many parking lots, but lately there are not many to design. Your coming from the wrong approach, though, Tanya. It is not what other landscapes would like to see that I’m after. It is what the few people that are having sites designed are lookinng for – the good, the bad, and the ugly. What are people actually buying in the way of…[Read more]

I have to say that I love this discussion! This is the type of thing that we really need in our industry; creativity, innovation and a drive for change. Looking at the current market not as a hindrance, but a chance for real possibilities.
I love the ideas so far. I think the ones that could really work are a competition or charette with teams…[Read more]

This discussion thread will wrap-up at the end of this week. It appears that there are two new ones that have just been started and probably will weave in well to what the summary of what everyone’s commentary in this forum has been so far. These new introductions also might provide a proactive (yeah, I know hard to keep that mindset these days)…[Read more]

This might sound crazy, but in response to your accidental post on the ‘are you thinking what I’m thinking discussion’….
I would LOVE to see some parking lots designed by landscape architects. There is a lot of retrofitting old buildings around here – particularly strip malls – SOME of the retrofitting is adhereing to architectural concepts…[Read more]

You can place yourself on the locator map on Land8Lounge, I found out. I think its really cool – if I want to visit France I could contact some of the LAs there are ask for tours or information….great idea.
I’m not too worried about my house being raided! I don’t have anything anyone would want – a bunch of drawings on trace paper???!!! ha! -

I’m kind of hearing two things:
A potential need for professional critique.
An unanswered call to examine landscape changes on a larger scale.I’m hearing from some students that the crits they are getting are unsatisfactory – geared toward their programs, perhaps, but myopic in relation to the greater landscape. Trace was talking about this to…[Read more]

San Francisco Conservatory in Golden Gate Park, but again, this is not a public greenhouse, it is a botanical garden; open to the publc, but for viewing only. I do not know of any “public” greenhouses wherein one could garden their own plot.
