True, BUT..
The job market is a global entity for most aspiring landscape architects and designers. It is impossible to visit all or even a great majority of the offices some of us desire to work in. A lot of schools are in places that may not offer a lot in terms of employment for designers and the job market is saturated with good…[Read more]

Dumb luck or right place at the right time? You have a better chance to be in the right place at the right time if you spend more time in more places. Artie’s advice will certainly do that whether or not you agree with his reasoning.

I appreciate that, but I think this was more true maybe 6 months ago than today. It’s a different ball game now and employers aren’t hiring because there is no work because banks aren’t lending to developers and entrepreneurs, not because they don’t want to hire.
Adding to that, there’s undeniably a surplus in good designers, architects, and…[Read more]

You have to be agressive in obtaining employment. Dont sit around just posting your resume on the net and think that you will be noticed. You must go out and intro yourself to owners of firms. Find out who they are, and make a surprise visit to their company. Let them know you are hungry for work. You will be surprised what comes out of this. Make…[Read more]

Yes, I saw your posting on Land8.net! You get three, week-long job listings with a basic account. You might want to re-run the ad or upgrade to a standard plan to keep the ad up longer…
Thanks again!

We seem to think we are nicely inter-connected and instantly informed about this profession by websites such as this one, and I have no doubt that many of us, myself included, find this forum immensely helpful.
In this particular discussion, similar to what one finds on Archinet (without all the bitching and moaning) discussion threads on this…[Read more]

I will try to limit myself to just saying this:This is one part of a system that makes many European cities much safer than American cities for bicyclists and pedestrians. They have pedestrian- and bicycle-only areas, too, in European cities like Drachten. I’m all for using this sort of thing here in the US. But the whole system needs to be…[Read more]

Thanks for your thoughts, Trace One, I’ll have more to say a bit later but I wanted to point out the gentleman being interviewed indicated a vehicular traffic volume of around 22,000 per day, plus bikes and pedestrians. To me that does not seem like low volume but I’m no expert!

This traffic pattern seems very low volume..I like the water – can we use jets like that to control traffic? Pretty thought..but, David, I am just tired of the car everywhere..I have seen this video, and have gotten in this argument before..I like this because it requires humans to think..But it is just too zero-sum for us bicyclists and…[Read more]

Hey, all…ever watch Ovation channel? 157 on DISH.
Here is a TV venue I think is most appropriate. They handle the world of the arts and design with real sophistication. This is not high school level documentaries. Most of the shows would be at home on PBS. They have a series called, and I may be incorrect, “Designer People”, or something like…[Read more]

In my limited and humble experience:
This question can not be viewed as an either/or. As a current graduate student, I utilize CAD, 3D modeling, hand graphics etc. in concert with Photoshop and Illustrator. The two programs in question are complimentary to each other, being raster based and vector based respectively.
In short, they each have…[Read more]

We put bulb-outs mid-block in Charlottesville, created a wavy driving pattern, and, man, if you don’t get buy-in from the public, the public just aims at those things and drives over them, shocks be damned..I say put in stop signs..A heck of a lot cheaper – have a cop ticket for a few times, and make them very visible. Nothing wrong with cars…[Read more]

great points made about creativity and productivity in the long run…
anytime you suck some control away from a creative person, they put less creative force into the rest of their work. -

Not being at an intersection should actually be a bit easier than otherwise. We do mid-block neck-downs out here all the time. You lose some on-street parking (if you had it to start with), but you also gain some potential stormwater benefits if the design takes advantage of that. Another alternative would be a refuge/landscape island in the…[Read more]

If this is mid-block, then a crosswalk is VERY dangerous, requiring plenty of signage and visual cues. . You can place the neck-downs mid block (they don’t have to be at intersections) and would consider it a requirement for a mid-block crossing. A speed table actually may work here since the crosswalk would be narrow, but would require bollards…[Read more]
