On a related subject, I’ll pass along that there is a straightforward way to move AutoCAD files to Photoshop. You probabably know that AutoCAD doesn’t provide a “save as” or “export” to Photoshop (probably intentionally because they want you to use their own products for rendering). An inexpensive program “Bluebeam” acts as a printer from AutoCAD…[Read more]

CS Thompson replied to the topic Are Landscape Architects Just Being Used As Graphic Designers/Visualisers in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 8 months ago
Graphic Design and visualization as it pertains to the field of Landscape Architecture is one of many communication tools that LAs use to show intent. Some designers gravitate towards these tools, while others may never dream of using these tools. As a result, some LAs may become film makers and sound engineers, etc… but you choose your own path…[Read more]

Danilo Maffei, FAPLD, PCH replied to the topic what is good design? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 8 months ago
Good design is appropriate, contextual, robust, unique. Good design is engaging, inspiring and still familiar. Great design is sublime.
Hopefully one of these days my work will be like that! -

There is freeware version called Gimp which I use on my Mac. It’s ok – worth what you pay for it. I am not that good with image editing software, so I wouldn’t really know just how good or bad it is, but I can do just about anything I need to do on it. Its fairly much like Photoshop, if not quite as slick.

J. Waldron, RLA replied to the topic What products do you specify to save energy, water, labor, or use recycled materials? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 8 months ago
I generally practice good use of xeriscaping techniques coupled with the use of bio swales, and natives. I also recommend rain barrels to homeowners and larger capturing systems to my larger, commercial clients.
one of the bigger “recycling” things I like to do on larger developments is use recycled concrete and asphalt from on site demo, on site…[Read more]

Sherman,
It may be a good idea to look through the US Forest Service Landscape Management Series, Volumes I and II (these were publications from a while ago so I’m sure there are updated texts.), Chaper 5 is on Timber and Chapter 6 is on Fire.
They also have a publication called forest landscape analysis and design.

Daniel,
The design work of those spaces are equally as impressive as the models. well done. I will definitely pre-order.
I’m a novice to SketchUp, and my biggest challenge is creating good landforms. I’ll be interested to read your techniques.
Some of my more modest models:

Hi Dan.
How much? Ballpark?
BTW, amazing models. Were they processed further in PS or Piranesi, or are these pure SU-generated graphics? If they were, aMAzing!
