It’s fantastic : been looking for that client for a few years now, and all my time researching the topic still cannot come to fruition. Best of luck for the process !
In all my internet wanderings and book readings, the most useful source I found is a book written by Wolfram FRANKE : “Der Traum vom eigenen Schwimmteich“, 2004. I have the french…[Read more]

Couple of questions:
– was this designed with the intent of being a skate park or was it “commandeered” by skateboarders?
– how is it integrated into the remainder of the park? That is…is it set within the main path or is the photographer standing on a main path?
– is it a neighborhood park (ie surrounded by home) or is it part of a city park…[Read more] -

Great idea !
I had so much fun as a kid building small worlds in the woods with my cousins, using twigs, moss, leaves, pines cones, stones, anything we could find, really ! We also loved to build dams on streamlets and related water engineering . . .
Looks like someone feels quite nostalgic about these kind of games : The pothole gardener

So I guess my initial suggestion of half of an oil drum, a pile of dirt and a bunch of sticks won’t work (random, but those were my first “design” materials)….I LOVED Legos – and they are very popular with my own 11 year old, but NOT as popular as Minecraft (as several others mentioned), which is incredibly 3 dimensional and spatial. My rugrat…[Read more]

Todd this is great. Thank you. I’m currently talking with BioNova Pools about consulting on the mechanical and biological aspects with me designing all the ‘aesthetic’ aspects. But ultimately I would like to be able to design everything myself. Just takes a client that wants one and right now I have one.

In fact, the permit process requires stamped engineered drawings in most states…NY and Ct for sure…in addition to naming licensed electricians, plumbers etc on the permit. The permit will also identify pool enclosure regulations that must appear on drawings.
Many towns also require approved grading and drainage plans as well.I think your…[Read more]

Take her out to see places together regularly, like parks, natural places, urban squares etc, and you guys start talking about life. Best gift she can ever get.
Then when you guys come across a shop, get her the tools Rob said, plastic pots and indoor plants seeds if no garden outside.

Fully agree with Jason : ever had a speeding skateboard unexpectedly hitting you in the ankle from behind ? Hurts like hell, and you do want to let the skater know you’re *not* happy with it.
Else : is it a school or real life project ?

If it is a public park area meant to be for everyone and not just skateboards, the preference would be to keep the uses separate. Around the city, the skateboarders have taken over various parks and thing that were never meant to be skated upon and have utterly destroyed very expensive landscapes. They also tend not to give two craps about the…[Read more]

A good old set of blocks or tangrams is a good place to start. I likeTegu blocks.
Other than that I was in the yard digging at that age.
This is a very interesting question and I hope others have some unique ideas. -

Try to send a private message to Craig Raines (Land8 member). I believe that he has done this in the private sector and now does it for the city of LA, If I’m not mistaken.

Have it blown in. You can hire a company (if there is one around you) that has large blower trucks where they just run a large diameter hose to where it is needed and the material is literally blown in place. They use them for mulch and to blow green roof media to the top of the roof so no crane is needed for the large…[Read more] -

I’m all about this concept. I did a project in school that incorporated a skatepark into the campus of a corporation I invented. The company was a clothing/pads/accessories manufacturer, and the skatepark was located in a central courtyard and acted as their proving ground.
There were different means of circulation for the employees and skaters…[Read more] -

Thanks for your response, Andrew!
There are 8-10 steps going up to the property. Our crew typically puts a piece of plywood over the stairs to create a ramp, which avoids the back injury issue. It’s still a big pain in the butt and takes more time, which increases costs.
We need to raise the level 6″-12″ in different places, so typically we…[Read more]

Stairs going up, or stairs going down? The difficulty with the wheelbarrow is keeping it level. One person is higher than the other in carrying it up or down stairs leaving someone in high risk of a back injury. Plastic trash cans carried on the shoulder is safer, but you can’t carry much more than 2 cubic feet at a time that way (vs. 5 CF in a…[Read more]
