more stuff…none of these notes are valuable by themselves.
Read the books first without taking notes, then go back and reread them to take notes. Interrupting the ‘story’ will hinder the learning process.
Project Management notes were taken for chs 1, 2, 5, and 11. The other chapters did not seem to apply.
CSE notes are how everything a…[Read more] -

I’d recommend that you become familiar with all the books on CLARB’s Study Reference List – Toby mentioned several of them in his post. The list used to be much longer, but they pared it down several years ago. I do not know if they rewrote Sections A and B significantly when they went to the new format, but in my experience taking the exams in…[Read more]

Thanks for the insight and the site analysis notes, Toby. I’m sure there are plenty of people here that would be interested in any other tips or notes you might be willing to share; I certainly would be!

Here are the cleaned up notes for Site Analysis. I might have other stuff on the comp at work.
I absolutely refuse to look at the LARE youtube vid, only because of the horrible, horrible memories of studying. Horrible, I tells ya ! Seriously, I took C and E consecutively only so I didn’t have to get back into ‘study mode’ six months after the…[Read more] -

For A and B, I read: Construction Contracts by Hinze, Project Management by Ramroth, Ready, Set, Practice by Sharky, and Site Analysis by LaGro. If these books are not at your local library, see if they participate in book loan program with cities/universities. For just a few $, I got these four titles. IMO, none of the books need to be collec…[Read more]

I had both James Hiss and storm’n Norman Booth for design/graphics studio at OSU. Not sure one could get a better set of ‘doers’ than that.

I didn’t have the chance to watch the presentations, but design wise, Foster’s idea of the large common spaces are what is needed in today’s office building. Zaha’s, just looking at the model, is just pretty with little interesting functional element. I like her work, but let’s not forget what architecture (and landscape architecture) is – spaces…[Read more]

I found this on a google search, and most of it seemed reasonable even for SoCal. You’ll have to adjust things for Canada.
A basic job, such as having somebody create naturalistic garden landscaping, costs around $12 per square foot. On a 50×50 foot yard, this would work out to a little more than $25,000.

Portfolios and Resumes – Design Strategies 13 years, 7 months agoKai, I would say keep it to one page. That is what I always try to do. Cutting out something less important every time I have something to add to it. Although if you feel you have enough pertinent material to add, do so. But definitely no longer than 2 pages. I personally like the one pager.
Might take a while, all I can say is stick with it if…[Read more]

toby replied to the topic Do your clients know what landscaping costs in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 7 months ago
Yeah, I’m still the opposite.
The client lists the goals, and I cut them down to what [I think] is appropriate for their probable level of mainenance. If they insist, I’ll oblige with the design, but they get an earfull of the costs and time involved on their end.

I planted a few at a job 10 years ago, on an east facing wall IIRC. Picked them up from a retail nursery. I have no idea how it is now.
I don’t see it at any of the san gabriel valley growers, so it isn’t going to get spec’d on any job. It is available at nurseries that my contractor deems too far away to bother with.
South facing is alw…[Read more] -

I applied to an assistant planner job in Del Mar, CA a while ago. That at least is truly entry level, and I wouldn’t necessarily need to be licensed.

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Job in San Clemente, CA in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 7 months ago
I see your point about the cost. It is a big deal, though. It puts you ahead of people who don’t have it and it can fast track your reciprocity in other states depending on the requirements as they are written for reciprocity. Many are not focussed in on the internship as they are with first time applicants. Most of us assume that they are, but it…[Read more]

I see where you’re going with this. And now that I have a (non-landscape arch.) job again, maybe I can save up enough money to take the LARE then transer my license to other states. But there’s still the whole 4 year barrier to overcome. It seems like when I finished my bachelors degree everyone said entry level was 0-2 years, but everyone wanted…[Read more]
