“the chasm between what landscape architects think they do and what the majority of them actually do has been very deep. Until now.”
Is this true? Am I in some tiny minority who has always recognized that they can’t all be grand, showy, award-winning projects?
From year one of school I was always told, and my experiences since have supported, th…[Read more] -

Check out Penn State’s Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies. I used their Trail Mix formula on a youth garden with pretty good results.

Thanks Ernst.
While we don’t have the heat you do, I remember studies from around here showing that gravel mulch was detrimental because it heated the soil and caused plants to come out of dormancy early, but they were concerned with shrubs and perennials–not trees. Maybe something to your theory….
Good luck with it.

While Landmark will most likely give you all the flexibility you will need if you are only preparing site plans, make sure you check out Renderworks add on for VW Landmark. With Landmark you can easily add gradients, tiles and even change opacity either by class or for each polygon.

I will be – there’s an installation of it at the children’s garden at NYBG, it seems to be holding up well.

I used to use M-Color and I loved it. The AutoCAD plug-in software works by creating closed polylines and it automatically fills them by layer. Using pre-formatted templates for prototype buildings and a standardized palette, I was able to crank out three different site plans in a day with this as coloring is pretty much instantaneous. All you d…[Read more]

Hi Mark,
Here in the MENA region gravel mulch is everywhere. It is considered as part of the xeriscape. Our main issue is that the permanent dust and sand flying around blocks all cavities. We have little problems with weeds or grass but need to blow clean – what a stupid job to blow the dust from one tree pit into the next – as this is easier the…[Read more] -

That document is a City Planning Department document and project. It has been going on for a very long time and is still progressing today. A great deal of it is being done with private money, so it is taking a while to implement, and it is being implemented in the areas of the city where it makes the most economic sense and where the…[Read more]

I think you just said it or nearly so – ‘horticultural expertise in AZ and desert southwest’ or ‘horticultural specialization in native plants of such and such landscapes’ – something specific like that.

Meh, at least NPR is covering increasingly LA related segments; the AIA has the money (much larger membership), let them spend it and let LAs get the word out locally to say “hey, we do that very well, how can I help?” Awareness and interest in project types in our field is good no matter who pays for it.
My question would be was there any…[Read more]

If you have horticultural or arborist certification, there’s that; or worked in a nursery… Some people fresh out of school list “related coursework” to convey some indication of the slant of their curriculum, or to highlight areas of personal interest. Maybe teaching/TA work related to coursework as bullets?

Frank Varro replied to the topic wetlands effects on health in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 13 years, 10 months ago
To over generalize, as long as it drains, within around 12 hours, or has enough flow to the water, mosquitos cannot breed, and malaria etc is uneffected. Essentially, created wetlands need to have some flow pattern, and detention basins need to drain.
