Well done Andrew – this could be a fun, yet helpful forum!
Coming from a local govt / civic projects (in Australia) perspective, here’s my two bobs worth:
Get ‘face to face’ when things get tricky (like Mark mentioned);
Build relationships with other professions (artists, structural engineers, civil engineers, archeologists, community development…[Read more] -

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your reply. So since you have your own team that understand the creative intent and the level of detail you require you can just give them a site plan and they will work it out from there?
That`s a great level of trust to have. Do you consult with your installation staff during the design process or discuss with them after y…[Read more]

Most non-design trained clients can’t see the things that we see immediately, which are the bad (or less good) consequences of a proposed course of action.
I usually go into “unintended consequence” mode with the headstrong types– just politely (but firmly) letting them know where every decision they are making is going to end up. -

Having gone the design/build route, I think the thing that has removed the most drudgery is developing the craftsmanship and professionalism in my installation staff so that I don’t have to do working drawings/specs. It also allows for lots of flexibility and creativity during the build process.
Interesting you bring up emails. I am very c…[Read more] -

BeLoose Graphic Workshop 13 years, 10 months agoSimple Tips of Applying Colors to a Drawing:
Do you know when we stare at a color (Blue for example), we actually saw the opposite color of the color wheel (Orange), these blue and orange colors are known as complementary colors in the color theory (see below left for a test).

Therefore two colors (Blue-Orange, Red-Green, and Yellow-Purple)…[Read more] -

Did you get your results yesterday or today about passing C/E ? Heard they had a really high passing rate.
DO NOT WAIT for LATC to send you anything. If you signed up first thru LATC, then they should get notification that you passed. If you have to call, wait a week or two and call until somebody picks up. Don’t leave a message, as…[Read more] -

Thank you Boilerplate, that`s quite the challenge you have put forward! I might start of with some smaller issues but that is certainly a good goal to aim for 🙂

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the feed back. Yes your right my question is currently quite vague and open ended.
Basically I am trying to break down the day to day routines of Landscape Architects and the common challenges faced in the office, weather it be marking up a design, organisign a site inspection, handling emails from clients, toublesom CAD…[Read more] -

Reconfigure our society so that aesthetics in the built environment are more highly valued than plastic surgery, celebrity gossip, and cheap beer. Disconnect it from the sprawl boom and bust cycle so that it can be a more viable lifetime career.
Hey, you didn’t say it had to be realistic!

Just thought I’d bump this to the top to see if anyone has any further insight/ideas/tips/hints, etc…. It would be much appreciated – just as the previous posts are appreciated.
I have a question about the newer, multiple choice process: after finishing the 5 national exams, what’s the next step? Will something official be mailed/emailed ou…[Read more]

Thanks for posting, Doug. The writer seems to have very muddied thinking, IMHO. They simultaneously make fun of the original NYT piece for decrying extreme gentrification, and talk about solutions to the problem of gentrification…and end with saying both extreme gentrification and poverty should be acknowledged – but the original NYT piece was…[Read more]

Just do what he wants providing it’s legal and is not a messed up plan which you will be liable for. If he pays the bills either quit after the next pay check or do what he wants. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make em drink. Our job is to please the client even if the plan is weird and off key………………make em happy.

Chris: Glad to help and I hope you found this information and the leads that go with it, beneficial to PGA’s efforts in West Oakland. BTW, I grew up in the East Bay, for what that is worth.
