There are a lot of good comments here. I agree that it takes time with the right company to gain the knowledge and experience to branch out. I also agree that It does take time and resources to do things differently, even if the new methods will increase productivity and quality. The situation I am in is more of an unwillingness to explore (even…[Read more]

MG replied to the topic Image quality when saving InDesign doc as PDF Interactive vs. PDF Print in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 14 years ago
As you can see, it doesn’t make a different whether its low quality or maximum quality. I think the reason this is happening only when I convert it to an Interactive pdf is because it might have something to do with the fact that the original files are images. These are the original layers that I put together in Photoshop. I can’t remember what…[Read more]

On a related note….a few months ago I read an interesting article about a study done on college transfer/completion rates. One surprising find was that a significant number of college students were “transferring down” from 4-year bachelor’s programs to 2-year community college/trade type programs. This was typically done in junior y…[Read more] -
Chuck Byrd replied to the topic monochrome graphic presentation in the forum GRAPHICS 14 years ago
There were several books out in the late 1970;s (Plan Graphics, Plan and Section Drawing, etc..) that showed many examples of monochrome graphics. Of course, it could have been that the drawings were originally in color, but the books presented them in “black and white.” Some were obviously monochrome, though. I remember doing projects in school…[Read more]

Chuck Byrd replied to the topic Mike Lin Phenomenon in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years ago
I walked out of a Mike Lin workshop at a CELA conference at LSU in the late ’70’s. Why? Because I was already drawing and sketching using this “style.” But I was taught by Buck Abbey and Van Cox – both L.A. prof’s at LSU. They probably leaned the method from Mike himself. I was also snagging a copy of every book on architectural and site graphics…[Read more]

Not sure we really need more egotism in our profession, but the other thing you see plenty of in architecture that we could use more of is design nerdiness. By nerdiness I don’t mean the tendency to wear bow ties and weird glasses or any of the negative stereotypes associated with word “nerd”. I mean a passion for all forms of design,a love of…[Read more]

This isn’t quite on that track but could tie in on the “ideal person wanted” theme. It seems that education and employment in general are becoming unhinged.
Majority of unemployed now have some college education:

Now, more than ever, employers would like a person with proficeint AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc., superior plant material knowledge, field supervision, and (10 years experience in mind), with a 0-3 years salary request, usually out of school. This is what these postings mean. No such individual exists. Most of the time, when the work thins, you are…[Read more]

I did assume from the Subject that this was about working on a government project.
But I enjoyed the post and the insights you offered into designing for so specific a situation as a reality TV show. Thanks!

It is very entertaining, especially coming from that world. i think LAs could learn something from them though. We need a bit mor4 agressive attitude and unabashed egotistical bantering. It would be good for the profession. We are too nice.

Can you post an example page with both presets so we can see what’s coming out? Maybe describe how that specific page was put together as well – what are images, what formats each of the images are in, what’s pdfs linked into another pdf, etc.
Also, I’m a little confused. Your original post said bitmaps (and did you mean bitmaps, as in .bmp or…[Read more] - Load More
