Jason your words below are characteristic of many LAs and I fully agree. When it comes to massive site plans, we are the most qualified by training. The political powers need to realize what we do and put us in the drivers seat.
Jason said, “Our voice is not strong, our voice is not united. We do too much crap and we cede parts of our p…[Read more] -

I agree with all. Too bad about the politicization of the word “green”. I have seen this too.

Dear Sergio,
this plant is really interesting!
We decided to grow it as an experiment. It is a plant coming from Australia and it needs warm climate.
Untill now it has been a successful surprise for us! It still has flowers, the first one came out the 20th of march! We’ll put it in our production…difinitely!!!
If you want to know it bett…[Read more] -

George, That is fantastic work that you have been involved with, especially the foundation you have established and the continued work in educating the legislators and public…the effort to become a part of the legislative effort is tremendous too. The details on ASLA’s budget is not known to me, but I do know that they have added (well over a…[Read more]

It is really great to hear from you and Jason. It’s encouraging to hear some progress is being made on the political front by the ASLA. Do you have budget figures that specifies the money spent on political lobbying and adds that define what landscape architects do?
As far as my contribution, Steve Potter and I initiated the Landscape Ar…[Read more] -

George, Jason is right, and if you were watching in the last few weeks, you would have seen ASLA staff and officers pleading with its members and non members to reach out to their lawmakers (aside from the lobbying they were also doing feverishly) to include language that made projects like green infrastructure and safe routes to school and…[Read more]

Thanks Roland – any ideas about compatability of the iPad with an otherwise entirely PC office? Would I have to buy a totally different AutoCAD? Can you share CAD files between mac and PC? Not to be ignorant, but I just don’t know!

Thanks Craig – very informative! Android would be great for campatability with my PC and phone – thanks for the app list and your critique of them too.

Ummmm, the ASLA does in deed have lobbyists, and does indeed lobby! They even have a Lobby Day where they ask LAs from around the country to come to DC and meet with their representatives to promote LA.
Many states also lobby their State Houses (I know mine does) and have events. Its not as easy as just saying “we’re going to do this now.”…[Read more] -

Zach, you are entitled to your opinion but you missed the point. Yes, we do all that you suggest, but we add more layers of education and marketing of the LA profession. All sucessful industries lobby the political system for their causes. Lke it or not, we are competing with landscape contractors, engineers, architects, and plannners for a la…[Read more] -

Hi Amy,
My thoughts of which grad school and even whether to pursue an MLA are mixed. There are many questions to ponder…and your transition phase can be so important~because it really is of you.
I did go for an MLA at University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, after completing my BLA at Michigan State University. i am happy i took…[Read more] -

Amy,
My boss here in Texas used to work very close to the GSD for a very well known LA firm in Boston. I was teetering on MLA applications when I interviewed, and he told me that regardless of your MLA degree (or location of said degree) his focus when hiring someone was to see what they could do. If you get an MLA from the least known Un…[Read more] -

That is not ASLA’s job nor it shouldn’t be. If we as a profession will loose more credibility if we are approaching the government and demanding that they provide us jobs. If we can not do our work to a level that is enticing for developers/builders to come to us with their project, and they believe that another profession can do our work be…[Read more]

Bottom line is why a MLA? Isn’t anyone paying attention to the economy and which professions are ALWAYS hit the hardest during recessions?
This is so true. Anyone in the building industry gets hit the hardest and not just LAs. LAs do get the worst. I found this out in 1982 when my Oregon design build business went from going wide open to n… -

@mauiBob,
I wrote this in reply to another one of your posts, but I’ll copy it here as well.

Most people who go for a post-prof 1 year MLA aren’t doing it to take the same courses as they did for their BLA, but rather for research and academic purposes (at least at most top schools).
And mauiBob, the masters realm is still dominated by MLA 1s, not MLA APs. What I find funny is that, coming from architecture (also a field that is…[Read more]

Some places are also now offering a 1 year MLA or MSLA for those who may have a 5yr BLA and substantial experience, kind of like a professional MBA. For those who are experienced and licensed, there is no need to rehash old classes just to get an MLA when you already HAVE a professional (and more in depth) BLA. The educational structure of this…[Read more]
