I work for a medium size A/E firm with muliple office around the country and am in a similar role. However, I am the Senior Site Planner for the office. I wear many hats at once it seems. I generate all of the initial site plans / feasiblity studies for projects produced from our office. Once the project becomes “real” I also have been prov…[Read more]

I’m not in an architecture office, but have worked as the sole LA in two different local civil engineering offices. We did not market landscape architecture in a very visible way because other LAs liked to stay with surveyors and engineers that did not have an LA.
I did do some design work for some landscape contractors and architects on…[Read more] -

Thank you, so grateful to have a LONG (and expensive) process behind me!
I gathered info. for about a month, but really only studied seriously for two weeks.
Not really any text books used, all on the web, besides for Sunset.
I read all the links that Nanda provided, plus Sunset in the CA natives section and what to plant under oaks s…[Read more] -

The aesthetic part is very important (it’s what distinguishes us from being another urban planner or horticulturist), but you definitely need some function to make your project stronger. The garden program that was mentioned is interesting. There are many concepts you can do and there really is no wrong concept. Choose one and execute it well. I…[Read more]

Congratulations!! Thank you for the notes. How long did you prepare for the exam? Any textbooks that you reread that were helpful or did you spend most of your time looking through the various websites? Thx!!

Hello! Took the CA Supplemental exam today and passed!
Notes:
The exam has been revised! As ERl noted the exam is VERY heavily weighted on the newish Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance and is VERY specific, so know all the numbers and specifics!
All other comments from ERL are correct. Below are some things that are still on the exam from…[Read more] -

Baltimore Harbor Waterfront Revitalization is a famous case study of successful design. Camden New Jersey, on the other hand, is unsuccessful..there are dozens of examples, though, just google “Waterfront Revitalization Projects” and start to read!

How about a mix of community gardens and Sculpture gardens that use the ruins to commemorate the past? In the 19 th century the British were big on building artificial ruins in their gardens – perhaps since you have the ruins you can turn what is around them into gardens (vegetables, fruit trees?) owned by the community, but leave the ruins and…[Read more]

Ramzi, I grew up in Beirut in the sixties and seventies, before the serious pollution problems existed. I used to walk through AUB every day, although I understand the Landscape department is out in the Bekaa?
Anyway, how about making your design focus more on ‘sustainablity’ by building some natural systems on the waters edge that clean po…[Read more] -

you should rather tackle it in a way that stresses the aesthetic part of it but underlying a deeper infrastructure regarding thos unfinished buildings. i.e facelifting it should be your main focus while sending an underlying message or a statement. how to do that? i have no idea. you should develop it further.
