I personally take a path of simplification. You do not need 50-100 different colors you only need maybe a dozen. I have shrunk my color selection down and have written down the formula of colors that I render with for different elements. Yes sounds boring, but we are trying to create simple graphics that convey our designs and not trying to…[Read more]

Usually the most user friendly program is not the best program to use. It’s like doing construction drawings with Windows Paint. Yes Win Paint is easy, but by no means a good tool for a professional and serious task.
For rendering landscapes, the best combination of modeling and rendering programs is to use 3dsMax, Vue, and Vray for 3dsMax. The…[Read more] -

I heard about Mike’s workshop during my bachelors but it wasn’t until I was in graduate school that I decided to take a 2 day course. It changed my hand sketching life. For me it was the confidence Mikes style creates. Before the workshop I had a sketchbook for over a year that had three pages of what I thought to be horrible drawings. I even took…[Read more]

Chupacabra –
I understand when you say being “yelled” at has different views from different people. And I can assure you I never broke down during my undergraduate degree because I had to make improvements to one of my projects. In fact, I would appreciate when a professor would make suggestions. The situation that I am in now is completely di…[Read more] -

I’d need to hear more specifics to give fair advice, but I’ll go ahead and play devil’s advocate.
I recently completed an MLA and pretty much all of my classmates had a hard time with critiques and being directed in studio by the professors. What they called being “yelled” at I didn’t even make note of. I was also surprised to see so many adu…[Read more] -

I wanted to say thank you to everyone that added to this thread. Trust me it means a lot to me to hear other opinions. Again I don’t want to sound like I am being “abused” but I feel myself getting stressed everyday before work, just wondering how will I screw up today. It is not a great way to start the day. I have been looking for work at…[Read more]

There was a group of tourists yesterday on a helicopter tour of the island. It crashed in the mountains and killed all five passengers including the pilot. A tragedy.
I think you know where this is leading to. Life is short, my friend! And it depends heavily on your current situation. Are you single and no children? If yes to both, time to move…[Read more] -

In the US, the main base materials seen in playgrounds (considering here the “playground” area, an area which has play equipment and is not a sports field) include: (the loose fill materials) sand, pea gravel, wood mulch, engineered wood fiber, shredded / recyled rubber, and (the unitary surfacing materials) poured-in-place rubber and rubber ti…[Read more]

Drawing with a Good Attitude
Many people feel they are unable to draw or sketch well either due to the lack of talented background or missing proper guided graphic skill. I have spent over 35 years of my life teaching people how to draw well with confidence, often I have seen people walke…[Read more] -

One charming fireworks tradition takes place in Montreal. On Friday evenings in the summer one country will present a fireworks display as part of the Montreal International Fireworks Competition. The streets are full of people (both tourists and locals) and there is always a friendly atmoshpere in the air. It’s a wonderfully civilized way of…[Read more]

Thomas I really feel for you. I have encountered the same experience (from one degree to another) at every firm I have worked in since graduating graduate school 12 years ago. With that said I commend Brett Long for his perspective and advice. One thing I would add is to try to be aware when a comment or an unacceptable tone is not “about…[Read more]

1. In 30 years, I don’t think I have ever yelled at someone for not working fast enough, making a mistake, etc. It just is not conducive to the creative process. Maybe you should wait until the mood is right then initiate a positive, constructive discussion 1 on 1 to see where you can improve and how you can be better motivated.
2. If you are…[Read more] - Load More
