…Or better yet, what does it say about individuals who CALL themselves RLAs when they KNOW they are not?

Stairs
-Riser thread heights or riser tread combined dimensions

Gaurdrails- spacing between rails, height, minimum requirement of gaurd…[Read more] -

LARE Multiple Choice Discussion 15 years agoGreat, thanks for the help!
I think I’m going to buy the LaGro book to start with and try to get the other ones through interlibrary loan (which never even occurred to me at first).
I would eventually like to buy all of them, but that’s almost $600 for all the books (used), exam fee, and study guides, so that’ll have to wait. -

LARE Multiple Choice Discussion 15 years agoThe test had questions from all four books. I think the Site Analysis by LaGro would be the most important followed by the Booth and Russ books. I suggest you read them all though if you are serious about passing the exam. They are great books to have in your library for referencing throughout your career so make the investment if you can. Als…[Read more]

Matthew Latham replied to the topic GIS in landscape architecture in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years ago
I went to the same program as Eric, and it was good to have at least an introduction to GIS. I use it in my practice occasionally. Two full semester courses seems like overkill. Too much for basic knowledge, but too little to land a GIS position, which mostly go to geographers.

LARE Multiple Choice Discussion 15 years agoJessica, you should be able to get all these books at your local library through interlibrary loan.

LARE Multiple Choice Discussion 15 years agoJessica,
I have Site Analysis, and Site Planning & Design Handbook. I read both of them, but only skimmed the Site Planning book. Definitely read Site Analysis and get the PPI study material, and maybe the CLARB practice test. That is what got me to pass this time.

A couple things that I have found.
First of all I am not sure that you need to send out a whole giant portfolio to everyone. I know that some people send out a “teaser sheet” and that works really well. One sheet that shows quick examples of your work with an option to send more, if someone is really interested.
If you are finding a lot of…[Read more] -

I respect what you are doing for sure.
I’ve worked in a few myself, but I don’t think you are looking at it as a career. I doubt if you are feeling like your landscape architecture knowledge is being applied as Katherine implies. It is definitely adding to your education, but not so much on the application unless you have an unusual…[Read more] -

Hey, I work at a nursery right now. It’s all I can find. I’m not making much, especially with the commute, but I’m learning my plants, getting a nice tan, getting in better shape, meeting interesting people and having fun. I don’t see how you can be a landscape architect without having some hands-on knowledge of the plants you’re using in your designs.
