You definitely need to know the structure of the company and how the ‘ladder’ works. Don’t be afraid to talk money, benefits, or how often you are up for a performance review. Ask if they had to let anyone go in the last downturn (if they saw one), and what types of positions were eliminated. Ask why they like living there. Ask why they got…[Read more]

What is the structure of the office as far as how work is dispersed at different levels. Will you get to see any design work, or will you be a CAD robot who drafts other people’s design work. What is the promise for progression with the company as far as reviews and promotions. Will they pay for licensure, LEED, professional development…[Read more]

Congrats on the interview! One question I like (and one that has worked for me in the past) is to ask ‘what are the main projects in the pipeline that I could expect to be working on?,’ which is a polite, wholly acceptable way of asking ‘why are you bringing on a new person?’ This simultaneously invites the interviewer to expand on a topic they…[Read more]

On the difficulty of landscape architecture education… A picture is worth a thousand words. How’d you like to write a 10,000 word paper every week?
A bad workman blames hisfools… EDIT: tools … stupid keyboard.

Hi Joshua,
From your description of why you use Mac’s it sounds to be like you should be running a PC instead…
As the Mac pertains to a LA
Color Management (N/A not applicable)
Graphics (ie Adobe suite) LA may use some PhotoShop but it is not the primary tool of choice – ( limited application)
Video editing (N/A)

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 15 years, 5 months agoLet me just add to my last with a couple of tidbits. Don’t worry about taking all the tests at once. I have not noticed a lot of overlap – each section almost entirely pertains to its stated material. Frankly, I think folks that say “that test had nothing but section # material on it!” likely did not prepare long enough to know that they were be…[Read more]

Mark,
You have hit the main ones for our industry. There is a good open source GIS (I will have to check on the office systems where we use it). Steve in an earlier post mentions Linux, but it is an operating system and not an application or program. Still, it is a really strong and stable alternative to windows. It is probably the most nota…[Read more] -

TARP money was for financial institutions. The money some are refering to is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The big question is whether the government borrowing money to recirculate results in more jobs than it smothers by the added deficit. It is forgotten that the government takes that money out of the economy to put it into the e…[Read more] -
