Thanks Jim. I know that some schools offer options, and some are willing to work out an ‘individual’ course of study for post-prof, but I was shocked to see how many don’t. Since writing this, I have found one or two schools who are adding MSLAs to their programs in the future, but not mine, and it is a major university center. It should come…[Read more]

Actually is just a concept to be Eco – like to be more nature friendly and to got educational aspect. And it’s going to be in the middle of forest (not city park). Thanks

The news about AutoCAD for MAC is a couple months old… I did a writeup on my company blog regarding the offering and summarizing some of the questions I still had… http://www.byla.us/byla-blog/2010/10/20/autodesk-apple-and-the-internet.html I think the post gets much more into the weeds that what is being discussed above, but may prove…[Read more]

Precast is not as bad. If you think it is going to be a problem a light acid wash can be applied, which will help with the leaching. Sometimes the base materials for the pavers can be a problem if they are limestone gravels/dust (I don’t know about SC, but that is the preferable material here in KY)
Besides the ph, another big issue we have (our…[Read more] -

I thought it just meant that a building does not use more energy than it produces. For example, it might have a large solar array that offsets any other energy inputs in might need. It refers to the operating costs of the building, not the environmental impacts of the construction. It might be so well insulated that the mechanical systems it us…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 15 years, 5 months agoIf you look through these LARE blogs, there have been suggestions…And my office had some old stuff laying around. Also some people buy the PPI exams and then share the cost with others, or if you take the classes you can get info. There were LARE classes at the national convention that I took last year in Chicago, $50 each, and that gave me…[Read more]

I was surprised to find this fair critique on P.P.D in LAM. In my opinion there is nothing new or revealing regarding the lack of depth in MLA programs for any experienced L.A. Albeit, the few non-LA practioners, who read LAM would find the information useful. The one useful point the article brought up is, ” why don’t more schools offer an…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 15 years, 5 months agoI just finished all the LARE exams, and since I am in California I also took and passed the CA exam. I took C and E together and A, B, D together. If you don’t mind studying and are detail oriented it is totally doable. My strategy was to take a lot of practice tests. As many as I could get my hands on. There is a certain way they test, a ki…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 15 years, 5 months agoI think taking A and B could work very well. But section D has become much more difficult recently — a quite low 51% passing rate on the last exam. Its also 3 hours long, and the material is very very broad.

LOL that was an enjoyable post to read. I would have to say that I adhere to the same understanding when it comes to this net-zero concept. I got to thinking of it because of the City of Dreams Pavilion competition where everything in the project needs to be: biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, net-zero, blah, blah, blah. Don’t get me wr…[Read more]

That is my problem with claiming net-zero also. It’s literally impossible to calculate every input in a project. How far down the rabbit hole do you go?
Take a 2×4 – Guys went out and cut down a tree. Those guys ate food. The tools they used required energy to manufacture and operate. The tree, after being felled, was trucked to the mill where it…[Read more] -
Zach Watson replied to the topic Net-Zero in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years, 5 months ago
So then does that mean that one has to account for all of the emissions that were used to created the building material and off-set them also? Then my biggest question in regards to that, how can one begin to calculate those types of figures?

Thomas J. Johnson replied to the topic Net-Zero in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years, 5 months ago
My understanding of Net-Zero is that after all is said and done, the environmental impact of a construction project is zero. That means that all waste materials are recycled or composted and that carbon production is off-set (purchasing carbon credits, planting trees, etc). It might also mean land-banking, or setting aside land that will never be…[Read more]

Yeah, I woke up on the wrong side of the PC / Mac bed yesterday. Don’t get me wrong, I do love my old Powerbook G4. It’s smooth and sexy. Well, it was, before it’s hard-drive crapped out after 5 years… I also like my desktop PC that cost half as much and has twice the horse-power. It plows through large files and hasn’t given me any problems in…[Read more]
