My impression is that the law believes there to be a difference in the skill sets as well as the need to protect the profession from arch’s and eng’s who don’t have the diversity of schooling/training. The health and safety piece may be less the intent of the professional and more concerning the likelihood that they confront the exact types of si…[Read more]

Culturally a textile factory may be a much better prospect than most things orphans have available to them in Pakistan; we just don’t know. Work may be related to family status, systems, relations, regionalism, religion, etc.
I agree absolutely about the cultural relevance of the master plan. Maybe look at villages in Pakistan for master planning…[Read more] -

I watch a lot of CNBC and read a lot of economics news, which may not be the best thing for my mental health! I’ve found I’m very curious about this thing called “the economy” that continues to bedevil us and toss our profession around like a child treats an old toy. Maybe it will eventually benefit me with a greater understanding of business is…[Read more]

Hi Brian
I agree you have to be able to communicate with the client in the early stages of a design. I am only suggesting that the electronic tools have their place (try dealing with several major changes to a design) By using CAD and tools like these you can still deliver that hand drawn look and captialize on the effiencies of CAD. The rea…[Read more] -

I bet the article may have been referencing landscape architect Robin Moore, and his work with the Natural Learning Initiative. He’s a well-known designer of outdoor children’s spaces and he ALWAYS advocates that the children should be involved in the design process. He co-authored a book, Natural Learning, i think it was, about transforming a…[Read more]

Professors don’t tell you how to do every little thing because there is power in figuring it out for yourselves. You will naturally gravitate to the tools and processes that are right for you. Discussing programs and process with your classmates is excellent, you will create bonds that last a lifetime and learn tricks more quickly if you share…[Read more]

At the Naval Academy they spend the freshman summer sailing and learning to tie every sailor knot there is…in the age of endless technology. ‘back to the beginning’ as they say.
For me, first learning to think with the pencil makes designing an auto reflex. -

I’ll wrangle this thread back in by saying the ability to fly. It was a toss up between that and invisibility but flying would save so much in commuting costs. Wait, hang on……I change my mind. I want the ability to print legal tender from my arse. That would get rid of commuting altogether.

I went out and hunted up pro bono work on my own time and wound up with a rather interesting design site and a group of people that were really excited to talk about ideas. It’s a great way to offer design services to people who would otherwise not be able to afford it, while also keeping you and your portfolio relevant in the field. You also m…[Read more]

I don’t believe the Republican Leadership is blameless either. They had the oppurtunity to get something done when they were in complete control and they spent more money than the Dems did! And succeeded in accomplishing nothing. That is why we need the Tea Party to purge the Republican party of all the Democrats in Republican Clothing.

Regardless of your political persuasion… if you want to effect change in Washington. Do not vote to re-elect incumbents from your district. If enough incumbents get sent home those that are left will finally realize what it is going to take to remain in office. If we could just get them to put a 15 year expiration date on all laws, Leg…[Read more]

This whole thing seems weird to me. Orphans gaining work experience and a petting zoo. It sounds like putting someone is trying to put window dressings on something ugly here. If something is philanthropic so be it…but educating them for the “real world”?
Off of that little tangent…my first thought was of course cultural relevance but since…[Read more] -

Besides starting a masters, I regularly attend shows, conferences, and letures by LAs and Architects. I have also traveled a bit to see major new works, and some older notable works I have not seen before. I also read a great deal in a variety of subjects just to keep learning.

Except don’t give them the benefit of the doubt about being clueless… incompetence was the last administrations excuse also. It’s the new “get out of jail” card. “I was incompetent.
