I became a LEED-AP and took some time learning more about native plants in my area. I finally took a part time unpaid internship at an architecture firm and that’s been the best way to keep my skills active. It’s better for me to be building experience and relationships which will eventually help me get a paying job than staying at home l…[Read more]

In the heavily political/red tape environment we live in today…that would be quite a superhuman feat to accomplish.

Take classes at your local junior/city college.

Do you have all of the building footprints and the site base? If you want to forward them to me, I’ll see what I can come up with… speaking of your thread about being unemployed and keeping your skills sharp…

Hey guys,
Thanks for all your input. Tom’s comment makes me realize a bit more background on the project might be required. This project is about two years old and runs entirely on volunteered time. So we have a situation where all the buidlings have been individually designed (pro bono) by different architecture firms, without any cohesive…[Read more]

I was going to the forums to look for soil structure info for the LARE and came across your posting.
I used to work primarily with non-profit organizations in Los Angeles on community based greening project – everything from sustainable school layouts to streetscape projects. On all of these projects I worked with the people in these specific…[Read more]

That’s not what I was thinking of, but I’m sure there are lots of similar examples of working directly with the end users. That’s the planning model that Project for Public Spaces (http://www.pps.org) uses in all their work. For that matter, I’ve master planned a park with the help of 5th & 6th graders at a neighboring school. LAM didn’t come interview…[Read more]

What I’m about to suggest may lead you off in a totally wrong direction given your situation, so be careful, but you should check out the resources at Architecture for Humanity. Cameron Sinclair also has a book called Design Like You Give a Damn. Great book, incidentally. While the end users described in these works are largely political and…[Read more]

My initial reaction is that the “campus mall” type layout would too closely reflect a prison yard, something a orphaned child does not need. Before doing any research into master plan design for the structures you outlined, I would first develop a very clear understanding of Pakistani culture for the region in which you are designing. Nothing says…[Read more]

I would like the seemingly (to me) superhuman power of putting my thoughts into action… which would in turn effect positive change in the world, make me more money than I know what to do with and foster the development of other superhuman powers…

When I was a kid, I loved building “forts” out of cardboard boxes, blankets, tarps, old mattresses, crawl spaces… you name it. The peak of my pre-pubescent architectural career was a “fort” created from scraps salvaged from a neighbors bathroom renovation. It’s bones were pallets covered with a tarp (for water proofing) and scraps of plywood…[Read more]

Why don’t you upload what you have and how you would present it so we can comment on it…That would help me see how you envision what you have and want to present…
I can then make more of realistic commentary and/or critique…
Look forward to seeing your work and how you would present it!

Any detail that you have which addresses a unique situation should have the plan view showing that this is not just a typical cut and paste detail drawing. Anytime you can demonstrate knowledge as well as a drawing skill the opportunity should not be missed. Face it, any landscape architect student ought to know how to draft a detail, but not all…[Read more]

This is a joke right!? You’re just putting me on Trace-1 because I made a comment about architects being able to do landscape architecture, right?
I don’t even know where to begin pointing out the absurdity of the design… Totally out of place? Check. Impractical? Check. Major hazard? Check. Stones of that size would not be movable (“hey…[Read more]

Really, are you kidding me? Repositioning stones is the award winner? So a couple of things:
1. trip hazard/liability
2. how do monolithic rocks moving on their own (a phenomenon found only on dry lake beds in California) have the slightest relevance to the textured landscape of NY?
3. if these are ‘movable’ to allow for emergency vehicles, what’s…[Read more] -

Had to log in just to say I think that winning design is hideous. I keep looking at it wondering how many bikers will fly over their handle bars and then when I read people could move them??? Wuh? Those rocks look incredibly out of place.
