I agree, I like Grounded Design – very nice site! Here in Fresno, we just pattern the bare dirt with regular rake marks, it ends up looking sort of like the symbol for earth, really cracked me up when I moved here..They rake the dirt..hee hee..

I really enjoyed your latest post. I agree with the others that it is as much about diversity as it is about eradicating groundcovers from the LA plant pallet. I have found that in recent years many institutional and developer clients are more and more willing to see more perennials and meadows rather than huge expanses of lawn and groundcover.

I wanted to focus on groundcovers in particular, not just invasives, because they represent a design concept that I think is dated and needs to change. As designers, we don’t need to be covering the ground anymore, we need to be expressing the ground plane in dynamic ways. Groundcovers represent a mentality within planting design that I think must change.

Its not just ground covers, but invasives in general. There are plenty of ground covers that can be used unrestrained, and some that must be restrained. I’m still seeing state-labeled invasives on LAs planting lists, however. Should be a required ECU.

I feel that rendering in CAD exclusively removes any feeling in the image.

Nick Aceto is on page with our firm. We typically use a combination of CAD, Hand-sketch, PS and illustrator.
As an office I feel it is easiest to have a CAD/PS combination. It is the staple for most University programs. We use a common hand-graphic style that translates into all the programs. in the end they are all just tools and unless your…[Read more]

I don’t know if this plug-in exists, but I sure hope it does. I render in PS the same way and PDFing layer by layer can be a real time suck.

I am lucky enough to live in the foothills of the Rockies. Here we are able to use a number of perennials, grasses and annuals to infill our beds and tree lines. We have a climate that will sustain a beautiful pallet of non-invasive hearty plants. This allows the average person to easily maintain and implement an environmentally friendly garden.…[Read more]

Topos 15 years, 11 months agoWhat is Landscape Urbanism? A discipline, an instrument or just a term to promote people and programmes? How is this term defined in relation to landscape architecture, a term that has proven suitable internationally until now? Do new responsibilities in practice and theory also need new designations? Or can the profession also be renewed under…[Read more]

Nice site!
Mine stradles the line between garden and landscape architecture. It’s about the form, meaning, and expression of designed landscapes.

That is just a start. There is a long road ahead of the profession. I think changes are happening all over the profession and hope that with a new editor our leading organization will give us some good articles on what those changes are and what they mean.

Thanks – I’m in CA and i just checked the LATC site – and I’m not 100% but pretty sure that work under a licensed person , while the traditional path, is not required. Someone can get up to 4 years of credit toward the LA license by having been a licensed landscape contractor along with the required education. Seems the most profitable path. If…[Read more]

Why use either except for touching up or adding painterly effects? Any changes required are likely to mean starting all over again. Using a CAD program with rendering capabilities allows almost automatic production of presentation Plans. Always draw with closed shapes and raise the 2d tree symbols to create shadows; simple 3D objects – extrusions…[Read more]

Arabian Landscape Architecture 15 years, 11 months agodear emad, if we want to discuss the advancement of landscaping field and have an arabian association, i believe its better to shoot the discussion to a bigger group like the middle east landscape group. one is because there are more brain pool and second is they also would be directly involved in the field, no?
