Rob, that’s a very good example….”at least there’s a breeze outside”….
I guess that “adiabatic cooling” system didn’t quite work out….

I’ve seen a lot of fakes and frauds in my time…..
all designed to profit a few in the name of what’s good for all. -

Alan Ray, RLA replied to the topic go stick a tree on it in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 8 months ago
the whole idea that putting trees on buildings makes them “green” is absurd.
what is sustainable or even practical about placing trees in artificial environs?
it only creates more maintenance and the need for more resources….
i’m really bored with it all anyway…
thanks for posting the article….i hope everyone reads it. -

Alan Ray, RLA replied to the topic Wide format Printer recommendations? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 9 months ago
I threw away a HP 7000 today. Totally a waste of money!!!
it printed up to 13″X19″, when it worked. I tried using it for about a year
and couldn’t take it any more. It was noisy and used too much ink….
was constantly chewing up envelopes and was a pain in the a#@s!
Don’t buy this printer!
On the other hand,
I bought a HP Designjet 100 D size…[Read more] -
Alan Ray, RLA replied to the topic Why designers are afraid of showing hand sketches to their clients? in the forum GRAPHICS 11 years, 9 months ago
Hey Robert, the way I keep clients from taking my drawings to others and not paying is
I don’t even make an initial site visit for free. I explain over the phone that if I come to their
place I’m working and expect to get paid for my time, including travel time. I find it to be a real good way to qualify the client….If they quibble over that,…[Read more] -

Robert, you may find it interesting that my Presentation Methods teacher was Harlow Landphair.
We had him at MSU before he went to Texas A&M…he was a fantastic professor.
Oh, and Welcome to the SEC…a great addition to the confrence. -

I show hand sketches to clients almost daily….what’s the big deal?
Of course, when I was in school, we had to take art appreciation, art design, freehand drawing, and 3D.
It was part of the cirruculum….there was also a LA course called Presentation Methods…..no computers back then in the earry 70’s….it’s too bad hand drawing is no longer…[Read more] -

Which field is more rewarding/enjoyable?
the answer to that question rests completely upon you…you’ll get out what you put in.
if you have a crummy work ethic and no talant then don’t expect much. if you work
hard and try to learn and hone your talents, you’ll probably do well, but again, it depends on you.
another piece of advice I can give…[Read more] -

yeah, they look like death on a soda cracker!
I remember having lunch with Garret Eckbo many years ago and he was laughing at all the design experiminting he and his peers were doing with plastics newly on the scene in the 50’s….I was encouraged by the fact that even some of the greatest sometimes don’t have a clue what they are doing….

My observation is that designs that are understated, simple and elegant remain a long time…these usually have a strong natural component. After all, isn’t it true that about the best we can do is to imitate nature?
And don’t get me started on sustainability…. -
