    Thomas,

I think your blog looks great. I like the clean, simple design. I also like your unique profile–so UNstuffy! My only suggestion would be to move your email and rss feeds up higher–you will probably get more subscribers. Well done!

If you want to see a beautiful residential garden, check out Ryan Gainey’s garden in Decatur. It’s not too far from the botanic garden.

Ryan is a very well-known designer who has designed projects around the world. His personal garden has been featured in numerous magazines.

The garden is open to the public. Google his name and you’ll find information about the garden.

I just finished up my VisualCV.

    You can see it here-

VisualCV is still in beta and needs a little work, but overall I think it has potential and can be a beneficial tool for designers.

    Hi RY,

I’m a designer who focuses on residential work and I’ve found AutoSketch to be very easy to learn and use. It’s a simplified version of Autocad basically, made by AutoDesk.

Dynascape is also a very popular program. It includes an estimating module and also a color module. I know many designers who use Dynascape and really like it.

The pavers were set on a concrete base. The paver was from Marion Tile I believe. I think that’s the name of the company anyway. It was a 3/4″ modular paver so we had 3/8″ mortar joints.

Here are a couple of pictures of the construction. I don’t have any photos yet with the brick.

    Hi Kevin,

I completed a university project earlier this year and we used pervious concrete.

The paving was a grid of approx. 10’x10′ concrete panels separated by 16″ bands of clay pavers (deep red, smooth finish). The contrast in color and texture between the two materials looked really nice.

    I don’t have any pictures right now…sorry.

I’ll be writing an article specifically about pervious concrete next week if you would like me to share it with The Lounge. It will have a video showing the installation and some finished photos. Just let me know.

    Hi Laura,

You might want to try elance, http://www.elance.com.

You can sign up as a provider and perform various services for people.

I use elance all the time for various tasks, mostly business/administrative tasks. However, I did find an LA on elance that does all of my color rendering, perspective drawings, etc. He can also do drafting work for me.

I did not see many LA’s on elance (aside from my guy), but there are numerous providers that offer civil engineering and architectural services.

Check it out, it’s a very cool service. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

    Good luck to you!

    Hi Kevin,

Sorry I’m probably a little late here.

I would suggest http://www.fountainsunique.com. He doesn’t have copper (I rarely see copper for this application), but he does have beautiful bronze pieces.

    Hi Brandon,

    I work this way.

I handle all contracts and put a mark up on my subs. Usually between 15-20% depending on the trade. This has worked out well for me.

Regarding your second question, I’ve found that once you build repoire with your clients, and trust, throughout the design process that when it comes time for the construction it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that they will hire you as the general contractor.

I’ll also explain that it is much easier for one person (me) to handle all contracts, scheduling, etc. instead of the homeowner trying to do it all. This way, the homeowner deals with only one person- me.

I also explain that each construction operation is put out to bid so they are getting good competitive pricing even with my markup.

    Hope that helps.

Also, I’m hosting a free teleseminar next week (see the event page) and Tuesday night we will be talking about this very thing.
