They probably will pay you a third of that $90, but it will not be all in cash. There are other components to a compensation package. Vacation, sick and personal time, insurance etc. That being said your salary rate might be $20 dollars an hour but if you look at your true compensation that the firm is responsible for it might be in the ra…[Read more]

Have you thought, as talented as you are and with whatever extraordinary skills you bring to the table, that your employers like you and your abilities and are hoping they can get all of your skills at a reasonable rate…..slightly more than what you a currently earning? If you demand something that increases your current wage 50% or more they…[Read more]

Like others have stated I think you need to tread very carefully when it comes to salary negotiations. I think your expectations are way to high for entry level. I have worked in firms where we have had interns that have become full time associates. Those people didn’t get huge raises when they became full time. They were given nominal rai…[Read more]

My partner insisted we go to this park. He lived in Paris for 5 years while getting his Masters degree. He loved this park and could not wait to show me. He was soooo disappointed with what we found when we got there..

Dennis J. Jarrard, PLA, CLARB replied to the topic Drawing Units: Decimal vs. Architectural in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 2 months ago
I think it depends mostly on who you are collaborating with. Most of my base information comes from surveyors or civil engineers and it is always in a decimal format. There is nothing worse than getting a site plan from an architect that is drawn to architectural units. You can use architectural units when working on your design details,…[Read more]

You will probably be very disappointed with Parque Andre’ Citroen. I was there at the beginning of September and it has fallen under great disrepair!! There was only one fountain working out of hundreds, all pools were empty, with broken water lines. Two big green houses exhibiting plant cultures from other parts of the world. One of them was…[Read more]

Always be proud of your profession and the work that you do. If you do not provide residential design then that is your answer to the question at your cocktail parties. I have worked in design firms providing both residential and commercial design. Personally speaking we received much higher fees on our residential work than the commercial…[Read more]

Dennis J. Jarrard, PLA, CLARB replied to the topic Need User Friendly Residential Landscape Design Application in the forum TECHNOLOGY 15 years, 7 months ago
I saw a program demonstrated at the Horticulture Trade Show in Chicago this winter that seems to be more oriented toward contractors. It’s called Earthscapes http://www.visualimpactimaging.com/index. I haven’t personally used the software but the demo they were showing at the show made it appear relatively user friendly.

I’m not sure why I am wading into the middle of this but here are my two cents. Below is an excerpt from your original post:
“Guess what? Seems, buried deep down within the bowels of CLARB’s malfunctioning, poorly-designed website is a no-refund policy. This policy was not located any where near any of the sign up pages. If it were, it would have…[Read more]

Well I am not from New Jersey so I can’t speak to the specifics of your state. However, you should read the eligibility requirements as listed on the CLARB website. If you have a degree in Landscape Architecture from Rutgers and the program is LAAC accredited you are eligible to sit for Sections A, B and D of the exam. In a lot of states you can…[Read more]

They barely send you a list of comments. There is a list of grading criteria that they have established for Section C and E., and then there is a scoring system of 1, 2 or 3. 1 = Pass, 2 = Slightly below knowledge needed to pass, 3=Well below. The scores you receive in no way reference any specific problem within the test. One basically has to…[Read more]

I don’t necessarily think that Landscape Architects have a bias against food plants, but perhaps have strong opinions about them because vegetable/fruit gardens are more of a “gardening” item and do not fit the bigger picture of what the profession of landscape architecture is all about. Landscape Architects are so much more than simple gardeners…[Read more]

Dennis J. Jarrard, PLA, CLARB replied to the topic Anyone else think the new construction slow down is a good thing? in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years, 10 months ago
I would have to agree that I have mixed feelings on the subject. First, I don’t have a problem with a construction slow down if that’s what it was but the economy has brought it to a dead stop. So many of my friends and colleagues are out of jobs right now because of it. Our office is half the size it once was due to the “slow down”. That being…[Read more]

Why don’t you just copyright your designs. This should give you a level of protection you desire given that your site furnishing idea isn’t some new and unique invention.

Nothing yet… I took the test in Michigan and my fear is the rummy that was proctoring the test from the licensing bureau never got the exams sent back to CLARB. They are probably still sitting on the floor in the hotel ball room where we took the thing.
