Jason T. Radice replied to the topic What is your favorite fountain? in the forum RESEARCH 16 years, 2 months ago
I’ve been there many times over the past decade (I don’t live there), and have never seen them working. The urns below the museum, yes, the fountains on the stairs no. They had always been drained. Maybe they were just off for the day. I’m going up there on Saturday, I’ll have to drive by and look!

I don’t think I have ever seen those working. So much so, I though they were permanently out of commission!

LA’s are also a bit more reponsive when it comes to code issues related to ADA and IBC egress. Even local codes and proper placement of materials in a commecial project (think blind spots because of too tall of vegetation in parking lot islands). Also, with the commecial aspects, there is the issue of any site engineering that may need to be done,…[Read more]

I think one of the major points I have as an LA, is that we so often get confused by not only the public, but our allied professions as to our capabilities. LA’s do sooooo much more than LD. There is always the ‘cocktail party’ situation when someones asks what you do, and they ask you to help with their yard. As you could tell by some of the…[Read more]

Depending on the state, and at my last count 2, had the title of Professsional or Registered Planner. Those with planning registration or licenses would prevent your employer from advertising “planner” if no principle in charge is present. But in every other state in the union, they can, as planning is not a registered profession in 48 states.

With regards to Google, you might be able to thumbnail the images (since thats what comes up with an image search anyway) and link to a flash image at full web res. Of course, text based search also works. Perhaps that is why your images are getting lifted, they may be TOO Google freindly.

I can see why people want to use your work to sell theirs, its great. One of the big questions to ask is how are they getting the images? If its from the web, thats pretty easy, just right click and choose ‘save as’. You may want to chat with your web people to set your gallery up as a flash slideshow/gallery, as to avoid the easiest way to steal…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Is SolidWorks the best 3D CAD software out there today? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 16 years, 2 months ago
3d max and Sketchup. I would definitely do them for Vectorworks as well. But you might check into what type of file is compatible with what. I’m fairly certain that of you model for 3d Max, you could use the same file for AutoCAD as well as Revit, as the information is designed to move back and forth between all three. Vectorworks may be able to…[Read more]

3D Studio/Max is also fairly promenint, as it is owned an has pretty direct software tie-in with AutoDesk (AutoCAD). Of course, Revit also comes to mind. Some firms also use Rhino. Solidworks seems to be geared towards the manufacturing industries, I am assuming because of easy export to CNC machinery or rapid prototyping equipment.

Only if he has a paper from the State that says he is a licensed LA. Even those who are formally trained in LA and don’t have that piece of very expensive paper, can’t call themselves an LA. Anyone can call themselves a LD, but not anyone can call themselves a LA. An LD can be more talented or more qualified than an LA, but there is always the…[Read more]

You still purchase a standalone or network license with AutoCAD. They do offer a suscription service which you are constantly upgraded and have access to training and tech support. It usually isn’t that beneficial to upgrade to the latest product whenever it comes out, especially if there are substantial revisions. I try to stick to an ‘every…[Read more]

You’ll be getting a lot of generalizations with this question, including this one. Landscape Archiects tend to have a different and much broader education beyond that of a landscape designer. You can be good at gardening with no formal education and be a landscape designer. If you become college educated in landscape design and especially the…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic material for rooftop design in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 16 years, 2 months ago
If the weight tolerance of the roof is that close, I would not put a green roof on the building. Even with lightweight growing medium, the wet weight of the medium, and any water retained/percolating sounds like it would be too much for the structure and have an adequate safety margin. You might want to talk to a structural engineer to see just…[Read more]

I very much dislike the subscription business model. Won’t even consider it as long as that is in place. It seems REALLY expensive to not even own the software. If you use CAD anyway, I think there is better stuff out there for the money. Check out the three software packages that were a recent webinar with LandFX, Vectorworks, and Dynascape.…[Read more]

I think you might be putting too much weight on the DesignIntelligence rankings. I’ve seen schools float up and down the rankings for years. I would suggest actually visiting the school and seeing the quality of the student work as well as speaking with the professors to see if their program is right for your needs. I’m applying for the fall of…[Read more]

Would be interesting to see the longevity of this product. Generally, any coating you put down on concrete or asphalt, comes right up in a year or two. Being that this is designed for winter use when plows are involved, I can only imagine the abuse this stuff will take. Either that, or you would have to raise the plows to go over the bridge.…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Traffic Calming: Speed Humps/Tables in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 16 years, 2 months ago
If this is mid-block, then a crosswalk is VERY dangerous, requiring plenty of signage and visual cues. . You can place the neck-downs mid block (they don’t have to be at intersections) and would consider it a requirement for a mid-block crossing. A speed table actually may work here since the crosswalk would be narrow, but would require bollards…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Traffic Calming: Speed Humps/Tables in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 16 years, 2 months ago
Tables don’t work well. I’ve used them in the past at a client’s request and they have a minimal effect on speed. I prefer using neck-downs at crosswalks and high contrast paving materials, in conjunction with some sort of highly textured surface prior to the crosswalk (mortared cobbles work GREAT).
