Actually, I disagree. Land8 is not facebook, it is an opportunity to show something about yourself outside your actual portfolio. Treat it as an extension of your resume/portfolio and get over the private information. Nobody on here has any idea what your skill levels are (I tried to look) because they have to be your friends first. I don’t think that is in keeping with the spirit of land8.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but why on earth would a company hire you if you tell them that you don’t appreciate and admire their work and would require not to do it OR get more money just to grace them with your presence? If you don’t want to work there, work somewhere else. If you continue with this attitude, I guarantee that you won’t work there.

My car is unmarked, and on the few occasions when someone at the office has asked me about my views, I’ve simply declined to discuss it in the nicest way I could. Unless it is part of the design program, I don’t see how these topics are relevant to either professional relationships or the design work.

Use plantings that are “transparent” (term borrowed from Oheme and Van Sweden I think) so you can have plantings that maintain an open feeling.
and I agree with andrew g – avoid complete separations, that is wasted work and materials. You know how hallways in homes rob square footage from rooms? same thing applies outside. For a cafe, it is all about ambiance and # of seats so they can serve max # of people.
also, include detail that is to be seen from close-up, it is kinda like psychological layering because there’s more to see and the customers will be sitting close to everything looking at their surroundings while they wait and eat.

February 1, 2010 at 8:53 pm #171326Jennifer de GraafParticipantA quick note – since hgtv is designed to appeal to a lower common denominator than I believe Landscape Architecture deserves, IF the ASLA decided to pursue a television outlet for industry promotion, using a network such as PBS or Discovery Channel would be far more appropriate and would reach an audience prepared to listen and understand.
There are countless discussions here on Land8Lounge addressing the lack of public understanding of our profession, but trying to change/raise the culture/education of the hgtv audience is a losing battle and brings our industry down to their level.

I’m sorry for the negativity, but they have been blatantly ignoring the role of licensed landscape architects for years! They also make it seem like all the work we put in only takes a snazzy 20 minutes to accomplish. booo hgtv!
I wonder what would happen if ASLA actually tried to correct the problem, but I’m not holding my breath.

I actually just got it off the shelf last week to refresh! He’s doing some workshops all over the country this year (check his website, anyone interested). I briefly considered going to one, but can’t quite rationalize that kind of spending.

I am keeping a naughty and nice list including comments and dates so I don’t forget where my resumes have been over the last 8 years in CA (Texas the years before, no need for the list with those folks – all were nice!). Sounds wretched, but I have decided for myself that if/when I am ever in the position of hiring or not hiring, I will at the VERY LEAST send a response. I promise myself never to be so busy that I can’t send a standard ‘thanks for applying’ e-mail.
