I would love to hear from folks growing this seed mix in and around zone 7 where it’s a bit on the hot side for the fine fescues and weed pressure is pretty high.

Yes you are worrying waaaaay too much. But I think if you wanted to work on one thing it would be making your vertical lines as straight (vertical) as possible. That’s where the drafting aids come in. But I have discovered some really nice pens. I have been using Pilot Fineliners for years but the nibs don’t last very long and then they are…[Read more]

Jim I just browsed for them and uploaded. Never got a message that said pdf’s weren’t allowed. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Jon thanks for the info, a bit over my head, but I might check out some of those websites. -Miles

Jon can you explain HOW you did what you did? What software are you using? Sounds interesting. -Miles

Jim I like your thinking. We could have a whole dicussion about not only the loss of good hand lettering, but graphics as a whole. I see some really terrible drawings being produced these days. I’m not the best hand letterer, but when I was in school I significantly and quickly improved my lettering by using some of those aids you mentioned. I…[Read more]

Re: Bob’s comments. Down in the virgin island where ALL domestic water is what falls from the sky they catch it on the roof, run it inot a tank and drink it. Period. Sometime there is a simple cartridge filter in the mix. I know they don’t have the air pollution issues we do, but It makes you think about how simple this really all could/should be.

Phillip I’m going to play devil’s advocate here. Are you going to be setting up a pump inside the cistern and using the water for a real irrigation system? Or will you just have the hand pump for hand watering? Unless you are either drinking the water or using it for an automatic irrigation system the whole rainwater harvesting into a cistern…[Read more]

Phillip this is a really good website with lots of good resources.
http://www.harvesth2o.com/I also have a book called ‘Design For Water’ by Heather Kinkade-Levario. It’s full of technical information, photos and diagrams of actual systems. A cistern in a cold climate like where I live (Maryland) should be thought about like a septic tank. Frost line…[Read more]

Kevin I forgot to ask you about the train from Cusco to Puno. Did you do this train trip? I’ve been told it’s a beautiful ride, but if it’s nothing special I might consider flying from Cusco right to Arequipa.

Jim thanks for the thoughtful response. I’m always afreaid of trying to pack in too much and never have time to just sit somewhere and take it all in. Like I mentioned to Kevin, we might bag lake T. and Puno. I’ll do some reading about Nazca Valley and check out the ezine. Thanks!

Kevin thanks for the comments. I have been having the same thoughts about Lake T and Puno just from reading about them. We might tain to Puno from Cusco and then go right to Arequipa and out to Colca Canyon. Anybody been to Colca Canyon. Thanks again Kevin.

Brian that’s great info again. We have some friends that live in Lima so for the short time we have allocated at the end of the trip we’ll rely on them to take us around. We are planning to hang out in Ollantaytambo (9,200′) before heading to Machu Pichu to acclimate to the altitude. Your experience sounds awful, but makes for some real memories,…[Read more]

That’s great. I’m a member of the Maryland Native Plant Society and try to use natives as much as possible in my design work. I’m way behind you in terms of knowledge but I’m working on it and I’m passionate about it. I think your photo archive will be useful for me and anyone else interested in using native plants.

Chaos! With tiny bits of thoughtful design here and there. I mostly use my home garden as a big test plot for plants I want to use in designs. I try not to spec. something I haven’t grown myself. So I have a jumble of this and that as a result. And I always grab a few things from my projects where an existing landscape is getting torn out or…[Read more]

Kevin,
I have a really good book that goes into detail (including detailed drawings, diagrams and calculations) about how to design and build rainwater catchment systems, graywater systems, etc. It’s called “Design For Water” by Heather Kinkade-Levario. You can also try talking to Paul Bassett of Hydrologix.

Mary, Good questions. I think I would agree with the other replys that it’s most important to have a bachelors degree in landscape architecture. I think the only time a masters is helpful is when it’s on top of an undergrad degree in LA or in conjunction with something like an architecture degree. I also agree that the particular school isn’t…[Read more]

Hi Kevin,
Probably late with this but I just became a member yesterday so I’m browsing around. A couple thoughts on the copper fixture. I did a copper bowl fountain on a project here in Chestertown.
