Ok..I’ve been out here for about ten years between Boulder, Fort Collins, and now Denver.
Personally I think if you have a strong construction background/knowledge coming from the east coast (as I did) you’ll have a better sense of craftsmanship and overall higher standards than a lot of what is considered standard practice out here. I still feel…[Read more]

We keep the plant block named, at least in short to make plant counts easier using the ‘bcount’ command.

has anyone seen synthetic turf used in dog parks? that seems like a really messy idea.

So what do you do when you get a new site plan from a consultant? Block it in? I don’t get it. I’m also having trouble understanding how you’re viewporting the ttblock AND the site linework into the same sheet. You have a vp inside a vp?
I like the idea of a national cad standard naming convention.

Why not just copy the ttb xref to each layout in paperspace? It updates all ttb’s at once when you update the xref.

Todd-
I’m glad that you joined and responded. It’s great to get a civils perspective.
On drawing the building–We’ve done it a number of ways. It gets complicated when we have site issues to work with. Like I said, most times we go with the civils plan in the end, but we work back and forth.
On separating files–I find it most efficient when…[Read more]

Daniel,
Would you say that having the degree in Urban Design has given you a leg up on professionals at your level with only an LA degree? Or might you say that urban design/planning is a branch of design that can be self taught?
The reason I ask is that I am very interested in urban design and planning for the same reasons you mentioned, but…[Read more]

I think thats a good question. I’m curious to hear what others think as well.
What you call ‘marketing samples’ I call ‘cut sheets,’ but maybe that’s another example altogether. I have thought of cut sheets as being ‘loose’ one sheet project samples, usually with your name and contact info on each sheet intended to be passed around.
Last spring…[Read more]

so you have a site dwg with a site sheet in paper space?
We xref:
site.dwg >
landscape.dwg>
grading.dwg>
survey.dwg>
utilities.dwg>
arch.dwg>to plot sheets.dwg (with ttb.dwg xref’ed to paperspace)
Wow, I feel like a geek now.

nca replied to the topic File Naming Conventions: How do you name your CAD files? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 14 years, 4 months ago
It depends where it comes from for the office I’m working at now. We save the original as a record and rename a working copy with our firm name in front, ie ‘TBG_surrounding base.dwg’. We usually keep the name as recieved it from the consultant unless its a really convoluted name. I’ve found that civils and surveyors in particular around here have…[Read more]

A Masters of Landscape Architecture, duh..from Harvard GSD of course.
Sorry, I felt compelled. If I could afford grad school I might consider something like environmental engineering. Others I’m sure will suggest an MBA.

If we’re working with an architect, we usually take their building footprint, put in our layers under our naming convention and trace and poche it. The output we’ve been getting from revit is certainly not perfect. It looks like really bad drafting, so it can be difficult to discern what to trace, etc.
Then the civil does the same thing, but a…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic hourly rate for small side jobs in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 14 years, 4 months ago
“Time and Materials (not to exceed)” is your best option.
Keep it simple, $300 is a pretty small job, and charge an hourly rate plus material costs as line items. If your client is concerned about the cost you can set a ‘not to exceed’ price so no one gets burned. If they cant agree to those terms on a $300 job you dont want it.

Tim, your portfolio looks great.
I really like the greyscale layout and bold typeface. The cover is excellent in my opinion.
After a quick glance I might say that the layout is a bit static. I like the grid layout and simple organization. There’s a pretty clear hierarchy and transition between projects, but I feel like some of your imagery could…[Read more]

I see. I guess living in Denver I get used to seeing a lot more of the former type of graffiti and and forget that there is a malicious contingent of that culture.

I think there’s an interesting graffiti discussion looming here..
I may go as far as to hypothesize that the quality and style of the graffiti can be directly correlated to the quality of place.

I can’t answer your original question, but I’m curious about the design and setting. Do you have any pictures you could share?
I’ve been to a lot of remote shelters and they’re almost always carved up. After a while it becomes part of the character. Although not a very constructive comment I think setting has a lot to do with it.

My opinion would be that bike lanes in lieu of on-street parking as a prescriptive blanket response is probably not the best solution.
Just thinking about it, perhaps there’s I hierarchy that occurs where a main ‘bike artery’ is identified with pedestrian collectors. I’m not familiar with SRTS standards so I’m just venturing some ideas. I think…[Read more]
