Good Question…
On a similar note: could anyone recommend biographies in book form on some notable Landscape Architects?
I have been enjoying this site in the meantime…http://www.ted.com

My experience is generally that the latter stages of schematic design tend to happen in digital 3D if at all. IMO, there are just too many “checks” in the process of formulating an idea in your mind and processing it in 3D. I think programs like sketchup make it more intuitive for schematic design work to be studied in 3D, but more important is…[Read more]

I’m not sure if this is exactly what you’re talking about, but I have a fw examples which may be relevant. Personally, I have posted a video in my folio I did several years ago for a student project which I would just consider fun.
Here is another from a Penn student..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inzefF-OJKQ
At work, my boss we are using video…[Read more]

Joe-
That was pretty much the logic I was trying to get someone to latch onto. Sounds like you’ve spent some time on this one already.

Michael-
I follow what you’re saying. I have in the past been known to be a hair on the pessimistic side, and have worked hard recently to overcome that side of myslef and, as you said, project a better, more positive and constructive presence. I agree wholeheartedly with this philosophy if even still the mechanics of it elude me.
That said,…[Read more]

This thread may be getting too far along for new replies to absorb the prior discussion in its entirety. I think there are many side-issues and sub-topics we could extrapolate from the preceding discussion. The unanimous response I see in this entire thread is that there, in fact, IS an identity crisis (or at least “issue”) amongst LA’s that…[Read more]

Still, as I stated before, it is with the actual definition of the word, “landscape” where the foundational basis for our profession as perceived in the public eye falls short. For those lesser informed, potential clients included, I feel expectations are limited at the initial handshake. I agree, with a resounding “yes!” that little can be…[Read more]

Jay-
I agree with most of what you said. Still, I think in further distilling the question you posed “how do we shed our reputation as a luxury item?” you fundamentally arrive at the original question, “who are we?”
Your point on finding “quantifiable” values in the service landscape architecture offers society in dead on.
Personally, I believe…[Read more]

I may not be able to offer much support here, but just to help expedite some responses could we have your hardiness zone and site factors such as desired height/spread, etc?

If this issue is such a lost cause, why is it drawing so much attention?
I think I would be remiss if I didn’t restate that I believe the issue goes far beyond the simple name change.
“Who are we?” is the real question. I don’t believe we’ve technically been unified under the banner of “landscape architect” for very long and may very well have…[Read more]

If changing our name from “landscape architect” to “land architect” is the equivalent of puff daddy changing his name to p. diddy, your proposed solution might be the equivalent of puff daddy changing his name to “John Smith.” Now, not only to we have the problem of evry person we come in contact with assuming what we do deals with the…[Read more]

I’d like to see your article as well. I know this has been written about, but I’m not sure anyone has directly addressed this as an issue unto itself, perhaps your article does. I may not read it though as I’d rather formulate my own thesis…[Read more]

That’s it! I can’t take it anymore…I’ve been milling around this issue for a few days…I’m going to write an article and submit it. I haven’t written formally in a long time, but I think we may be on to something with this. After all, “Land Architect” for example, wouldn’t even require that much official change ie ASLA (American Society of Land…[Read more]

I’d say some of my professors at CSU-Joe Mcgrane, Brad Goetz, Christine Dianni, and Merlyn Paulson..I know that sounds a little sappy.
Other ten that I’d have to really think about who has had the greatest influence on me.

I’ve heard “Land Architect” before a couple times. It’s simple and conjurs up a better image in the minds of potential clients, friends, and family IMO than “landscape architect.”
Landscape Defined:
1. visually distinct scenery: an expanse of scenery of a particular type, especially as much as can be seen by the eye
The word “landscape” seems…[Read more]
