Okay, maybe..
But I’ll again emphasize that I think this topic reaches much beyond playgrounds and equipment. It seems like too many people are in the business of telling those left with some semblance of an imagination what they CANT do. I’m barely getting started and it’s already become clear that theres alot more money in counting beans than…[Read more]

I think everything, in general, in America is “too safe.”
If it weren’t for all these damn insurance companies and sue-happy lawyers running the show, not to mention the pharmaceutical companies…Am I close?
But seriously, I think the general sanitization of every possible opportunity in the landscape makes for a pretty boring place and in alot…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic How can I "try out" LA before going for an MLA? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 3 months ago
I would think it would be pretty difficult to find an internship without a landscape background or technical knowledge, but maybe..??
What would you say your timeframe is for potentially re-entering school? Maybe you could take an undergrad intro level LA class. Intro to LA at CSU is more of a lecture with many non-LA majors and a few studio-like…[Read more]

I’m hoping someone can recommend a good intro level storm drainage course perhaps. I’d like to get into a lecture that touches on key points without getting too deep into calcs. Is this feasible, anyone done this?
Thanks for the reply Schmid..

New Graphic…
This one had to be quick (+/- 4hrs.)…I painted the trees last year and saved them as a psd for projects like this.

I did the Design Workshop internship 07 charette in Asheville.
The DW Asheville office is nice. The town is pretty progressive for the south and the mountains are right there, but not much skiing and the peaks are tree-covered to the tops. The rivers and gorges are beautiful, though I think the weather ranges from warm to hot with little…[Read more]

Perhaps instead of the $1600 for a CAD specific course, I might take a basic drafting or garden design course and get your feet wet with cad on your own as others have said.
Basic hand drafting courses will teach you about lineweight and graphic standards. The other cool thing that I believe helped me alot was learning how to manually draft…[Read more]

I agree with the last two posts on learning yourself. Still, this will only take you so far. Learning how to manage xrefs and other office standards will be important later.
I’m using landfx now at work 🙂
It’s a handy program, but fairly easy to learn on the job and I don’t see much application for it in school, still good to know. Mcolor is…[Read more]

I nearly completed an associates in Architectural Drafting at a community college, which entailed much instruction on the nuances of AutoCAD (2002 at the time). In 2005 I returned to CSU to complete my BSLA. The classes I took at the community college did not transfer credits, but I believe I had a sizeable advantage over many of the other…[Read more]

Thanks Leo,
Funny you call “trace” “tissue” as I hadn’t heard it called that until a few weeks ago by one of the engineers at work. I have, on the other hand, heard “bumwad.”
Those renderings look really nice. Some of the posts on here, including yours, have inspired me to draw more by hand. Leo–are you drawing over cad linework/base?

RF,
I understand what you’re point is and respect it. Still, just because everyone else is doing something one way doesn’t mean that is the correct way, or that there even is one. I know thisisn’t necessarily what you’re getting at, but I think it’s close. I have a quote by Paul Rand, a notable graphic artist who did the still unchanged logos for…[Read more]

Check my folio. I just added samples of some of my work (will be adding more later on). The orginial hand-rendered graphic was done in colored pencil about 5 1/2 years ago. In the past year, I scaled the graphic in AutoCAD and cranked out the…

I know what Brandon is saying. What would you suggest?
I use some 3D, but keep it fairly limited. I have a feeling you’re going to start talking about Frank Gehry any minute 😉
My thought is that if you can’t sketch it, model it, or at least dream it without the aid of a computer you certainly shouldn’t bother taking the time to actually render…[Read more]

Adam,
Those pieces are very nice. I’d like to explore more “manual” styles this coming semester as I think the computer and even traditional hand rendering can really bog you down. Thanks for sharing those. Good work.
