Thanks for your output. Though this post should not be taken as “the close” in this discussion. Let’s make this a continued discussion. I’m truly hoping our Program staff would stumble into this in the future for their reference.
Curiously, I find the program as quite adequate (though I tend to agree with the need for exposure to actual practice…[Read more]

Good point on part-time work, Paolo. There indeed are programs in US Universities when students take a year off to work in a firm prior to their senior year. FYI, the summer internship was the best possible option, ever, at 2001. The program, in fact, is pioneering for the College; BS Arch followed suit only around 2005.
Good probably if the…[Read more]

So interested in constructed wetlands as a ecological system and a landscape element. Any with experience care to share? Finally, any opinion as to its feasibility in arid-desert locations (MTE’s or more severe climes)?

I think this has to be put up, with UP in its Centennial Year now. The UP philosophy in education serves us well, based on how well we’re doing around the globe; our turn to pay forward and let the others know we were/are: ISKOLARCHS!

I have to say that this notching thing is quite HIDEOUS! If I have to choose between retrofitting and good management, I’d opt for good building management, via environmental comm, presence of authority, bike patrols, the like.
My sentiments tend to go for ‘Let ’em ride’, but for the sake of problematizing the issue, I think I’d consider shorter…[Read more]

Hi Jay.
Might be simplistic but, I’ll call it the way I saw it: it’s not always in the client’s best interest to planning and design theories we see as win-win. For example, trees to reduce solar exposure and reduce energy inputs get sidelined because it covers the desired architecture. Besides, it forces people quickly out of the cars and into…[Read more]

Hi Guys. My two fils worth, based on my two years worth of practice in the UAE.
For sure the various Palm Projects aren’t sustainable in the current “Brundtland Commission” context (taken in the context that the landform has to be regularly checked for erosion, plants have to be drip irrigated and sprayed to maintain its measure of lush, there…[Read more]

Some answers to a some questions two pages back: I count L. Azeo Torre and William Kirby Lockard….hehe, and Reimon buyco….as inspirations. My weapon of choice for the draw? A Pilot Rollerball for fine lines, any felt tip pen (Pilot or Pentel) for medium weight lines, and any thick marker (Sharpie, inevitably)…all black. On tracing, or plain…[Read more]

Hello Andrew, Nick, and the rest.
Here’s my contribution (attached). I actually stand by our title, though I feel we should bear without regrets the responsibility of explaining the scope of our discipline and the accompanying definition of our services. The attached article attempts to describe our profession, as I understand it, with the scope…[Read more]

Hello Andrew.
Emailing you a scan of the article soon.
Hello Nick.
Will do so only if you still need it via your email addie; respecting your need for intellectual integrity, not that I have anything really substantial to taint you with. You might rather find it in the end as plain hot Middle Eastern air.
Cheers.

Hmm…come to think of it, my fellow larkies in the office fit the description. The accreditation system seems quite blurry for now this side, save bulletins for seminars by the Emirates Green Building Council (initiative by HH Sheik Makhtoum), but developers are taking notice. Much talk in meetings about projects meeting Green Building standards, but not much push or initiative from the companies yet on getting on board the…[Read more]

Hello all.
Three questions for all. (1) How significant is the LEED initiatives of the UAE (or the GCC in general) to your current projects and practice? (2) Is LEED accreditation a must in your office? (3) Have your office/EGBC/local LEED contacts informed you of the process to get accreditation?
A mouthful but important. Thanks in advance for…[Read more]

Hi’s and Hello’s to you all. Got a short question for you guys. I’m not familiar with mesquite (Prosopis juliflora), so do you know if this could be propagated en masse asexually? Rumor has it in the UAE that the indigenous and endemic trees here are resistant to mass asexual propagation. I hope you can prove me wrong….
