Aside from the client’s intention to pay or speed of payment, there are legal roadblocks to slow down their payment and even to take fees out. In short, unlike a client in Europe, the Chinese cannot simply do a wire transfer even if they want to.
The projects I have worked on in China include a local Chinese licensed office that is part of an…[Read more] -

I would support what Leslie wrote.
And add three points.
1. Only you can figure out what you should do
2. If you start to study hort. and switch to landscape architecture, the hort. study will make you a better landscape architect. If you do it the other way round the landscape architecture study won’t be a total loss but you may spend alot of…[Read more] -

If you decide to become an L.A. you will need to do more than a second Bachelors.
No because the education time and expense of becoming a landscape architect is substantial and may take you where you don’t want to go.
The L.A.s on the Forum will disagree, I expect, and can explain why going for that degree will get you what you want. -

Well let me say: that is what I do. I am a horticulturist who doubled in landscape design. No L.A. Admittedly I have had many lucky breaks and opportunities, but now I do landscape design as a horticulturist: concentrating on the plants, soils, matching planting design to environmental conditions and often a client’s vision. Of course, I spent…[Read more]

Long ago a mentor challenged me with the question: Do you want to be holding a trowel for the rest of your career?
So another question for you: do you want to be working with…touching…plants? Or just planning for them, imagining them? Certainly many L.A.s are hands-on. But Horticulturists are all hands-on. -

This is telling. Either path will involve more education, interning, cost and time. And few L.A.s work in botanical gardens (although many do have gardens as clients). Botanical Garden work may require horticulture or plant science background. One can design once there, so landscape design background is helpful.
I guess the question then is, how…[Read more] -

Then it depends on whether you are interested in designing landscapes and master planning, or perhaps a career in botanic gardens.

Rob Halpern replied to the topic Are Green Walls "worth it"? in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 10 years, 8 months ago
And those “intangibles” are, IMO, the real reason to do a green wall. It is a mistake to sell them as sustainable or environmental or “green.” They are.mostly just… pretty

They are “deeply concerned that the LEED rating system is becoming a tool to punish chemical companies and plastics makers.” They prefer Green Globes, which is more lumber, plastic and generally industry friendly.

Thanks, Tosh, interesting read.
Leaves me feeling, though, that “thinkers” spinning ideologies about ideal spaces for people ought to observe people using spaces. They may despise these green spaces but people love and use them. Stupid stupid people. -

More seriously: workable design happens out there in reality. So a tactile, visceral playing with spaces and volumes, textures etc is important. Sublimating the experience to the computer as a first step seems misguided to me. We design in space, we use computers to communicate it.

With a world human population exceeding 7million and headed to 9milion (if you can believe those scientists) one wonders how de-urbanization can be possible.

IF you might be running AutoCAD at home, make sure your monitor’s driver is compatible as well (if you do alot of gaming it may be already taken care of)
