Matt – I agree with everything you said.
The speed gained from the Lin “tricks” is what helped me the most, which made me practice more, which made me better. I agree with some of the others that you can also do this on your own, but will you? For me I needed the environment to push me. -

Deryn – I did the shorter 2-day and 7-day classes in San Francisco and felt that it was worth it. Of course I’m local so I didn’t have to pay for airfare or hotel. ; ) You are right that the confidence is almost as much a factor as the actual skill. Thanks Brian and Andrew! I ended up going to BPS. They do a great job. The only place I could find that was open on Sunday was Kinkos… I’ve heard too many horror stories to go there.
Brian, How did the workshop go? I was going to stop by but it sounded like you were covered.

It’s funny that in my transition from industrial design to landscape architecture I found the same issue. What’s in a name? Industrial designers were always lamenting being mistaken for factory designers. I think that my cocktail party persona must have been closer to Rosie the Riveter than any hipster on HGTV.

Thanks, I have had some non-design jobs in my time too and I can really relate to the “do what you gotta do” attitude. No sense dwelling on it, just pick yourself up and do what you can. I’m moving into LA because my design profession, ID, is too crowded with not enough jobs, I think you’re right that LA is top heavy which should help me out.…[Read more]
