Zay Gezunt..? hm! who’s that? Yeah, A.E. Bye died a bit ago, he did some terrific gardens, one for George Soros out in Long Island..I like them…some people say it is ‘the beauty of the golf course..” He was really into naturalistic stuff, just using what was there and enhancing – we met him at a gorgeous garden on some rocky outcropping in…[Read more]

Thomas, I had to laugh when I read your post..as it relates to my experience – Mr. Ed Bye is one of my favorite deisgners, and if you have seen his illustrative plans – they are art..Very beautiful, very unusual plan style..So when we took Ed Bye’s studio, at Penn, we were all like, “Mr. Bye, we can’t wait to see your perspectives!! “and he was…[Read more]

Trace One replied to the topic Politics and Professional Practice – keep it to yourself or wear your heart on your sleeve? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 9 months ago
Yes, we mostly have to learn to keep our politics to ourselves, Tanya, but I do agree with your interest in political expression..It is so difficult to talk politics in the US these days (a point I was trying to make in an earlier post) that we opt just not to do it..I think that is to our detriment – we need to learn to be able to talk politics,…[Read more]

You’re right, Jason – Manassas! One of my favorites – where Stonewall Jackson got his name..Used to take my dogs there..But the traffic!!!(to get there..)..And Skyline drive , CCC or WPA or whatever, LA’s on the gov dole in the thirties – still a gorgeous road..!! Gorgeous drawings for it’s construction..Thanks for reminding me of this stuff,…[Read more]

I meant to mention it before, but wasn’t sure you were interested in the natural – Great Falls Park is a really incredibly geological event – it’s a ‘great fall’ in the Potomac – really dramatic – I love it..
Have fun! I used to live in the nasty suburbs of Mclean Virginia for much of my life, when not posted abroad..I always think that is why I…[Read more] -

I second Jason with the Dumbarton Oaks suggestion – it’s really beautiful, although NOT the best time of year, of course..Disagree about the National Botanic Gardens..did nothing for me, we have so many incredible Botanic Gardens in america..
I love the Hirshhorn sculpture garden, and the Freer, on the mall, and if you’ve never seen it, of course,…[Read more] -

I think artificial turf has been shown to promote some noxious types of bacteria, which gather in the sweat and detritus of the plastic and propagate,…[Read more] -

Hard to tell from this information, Cassie..Is it too far for the kids to walk? I think trying to get kids to walk to school has to be a multi-front war – make sure there are safe crossings, with pedestrian lights, safe sidewalkds, route continuity, and bike paths – can’t have too many bike paths, as far as I am concerned. It can be hard to…[Read more]

fun to talk about..thanks for the reply..I took a class when at UPenn designed by Anne Whiston Spirn for architects and LA’s to take together – really interesting..I worte my paper about how I felt concrete was dead, a dead element, and was countered by a very pretty and nice architect espousing the versatility of concrete, and thus it’s…[Read more]

thank you for entering the lions den, Gregory W., volunteering to us your status as a sacrificial lamb! You sound like you have very good work ethics in your group. I think in my life I have found many architects who don’t have a clue what good landscape design is, how to match it with their architecture, and care even less. The architects will…[Read more]

Heard about some book on the radio today where the author was positing that management can be either ‘enhancers’ or ‘diminishers’. The diminishers make everyone work for them, and have the common characteristic of not valueing different types of people… I just got out of such an office. The ‘enhancers’ (I think that was the right word) see value…[Read more]

This is meant to be a reply to JASON RADICE’S comments, but for some reason it keeps slipping back to Ben Yahr’s place. So to be clear, this comment is in reply to Jason Radice’s comments;
Ah-ha! so the argument about regulation and the oil spill DOES have some relevance to a discussion of what america is all about..

So how you you, Andrew, and Jason, think we should proceed, as a society, regarding off-shore drilling? Less regulation, more free-enterprise? Is that the American way?

I think likeablity would be one factor, Mr. Schmid – addmittedly perhaps a big one – Japanese youths are apparently egaging with frequency in cosmetic surgery, to help with the hiring process.
However, I think one can’t disclude the value of a study – even just to see if there are any correlations to anything..yes it can be skewed, but yes also, a…[Read more] -

It would be nice to introduce some hard facts into this debate. The data required would be fairly self-evident: Gather course work requirements for all BSLA degrees and compare with course requirements for MLA programs. Gather information from help-wanted, etc. for LA’s on requirements, and who gets hired. Gather information on other types of…[Read more]
