That’s two votes for good old E. Barlow, of Central Park fame..On the list! Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it, and am pretty much buying everything everyone listed, so far.. My retirement will be financed by selling my book collection.

This is a good idea, that one is gorgeous, but there are a lot of ‘mitigation measures’ that to me are just bandaids for the displacement of wildlife – like providing llittle holes in concrete highway barriers to let the kit fox get through (right!), or timing a project for when bats aren’t nesting, then providing bat boxes when the project is…[Read more]

maui, some of my favorite guys are at Penn State LA – it has a direct connection to Ian McHargs Upenn era, and those guys have it going for them..I really do wonder about Penn State LA, which is HUGE, and this football thing..I should ask them..Has it hurt them? Why would LA be tied to this scandal, football, more than the documentary on Penn St…[Read more]

I agree with Mr. Halprin, and will refer people to a famous (and huge) one at the Hotel Del Coronado in California.
That’s fun, Andrew, try another..! -

The French just elected an anti-austerity leader. I am hoping that the US will also see that trickle down economics, cutting taxes on the rich, does not work, and reverse the course we have been on for twenty years and start to re-invest in our society. That would change your calculator button.

If Werner Von Braun could do it, so can you, Roland! “You too may be a big heroOnce you’ve learned to count backward to zero.In German, oder English, I know how to count down, and I’m learning Chinese!”Says Wernher Von Braun
Good luck, buddy – any language expands the mind, and if you listen to Evan Osnos on china, he insists that English is the…[Read more] -

this may interest you, Roland..Maybe this is the kind of stuff your dad is reading. Or maybe he is just interested in the ‘landscape’ – sounds like a lot of the beaches have some very nice scenery. Kidding! -

seems like you should get the job first, Roland. I have often moved without a job, and it is not fun. Recently I have moved WITH a job, and it is a lot better. Why stop at Brazil, if you are willing to go abroad? Seems like Dubai and China are pretty hot (literallly and figuratively..unfortunately)..
Or even Canada, for that matter – perhaps…[Read more] -

Ailanthus, artemesia, black cherries, pokeweed, jimson weed – how’s that for a sustainable plant palette for the High Line? And anything that falls in, like perhaps a walnut, can grow up where it has some support from the local weeds…
How about that, Jason? How would you make the High Line sustainable, if Jim Corner called you up and asked y…[Read more] -

Alland, you have to get tickets to visit the High Line in New YOrk, practically. It is hugely crowded, almost from it’s first day.
and that is a really good call, Jason. I hate the feathered look anyway, you have given me another reason to dislike it.. -

In Virginia the kids would have hour and a half bus rides, and then sit in the school parking lot in the full buses until the bell rang to signal them to run to their classes (this is rural virginia, outside of Charlottesville, so it was not running because of a dangerous urban neighborhood) because they could not be allowed in the school pl…[Read more]

I read that some school districts that have been devastated by the economic downturn have actually ceased busing service for kids who live less than a mile from the school..Every dark cloud has a silver lining, or something like that – the ridiculous bus rides that kids take to get to school in the morning has long been a pet peeve of mine..
