For what it’s worth, we use an internet blocking software at our office and it has blocked your site. If we had a job opening, or thought we might make one for the right candidate, there are ways to turn off the filters, but that adds a step to reviewing your work. With the ratio of applicants to open positions approaching ridiculous, I don’t…[Read more]

Knowing Photoshop does not a graphic designer make. I toyed with freelance GD for a while several years ago, and after spending time with real graphic designers (on forums and in person) that is the conclusion I came to. I started doing all the marketing graphics for the firm I work for, which lead me to believe that I could also offer those…[Read more]

Eric, I’ll try and help but I need some more info. It might be that you’re experiencing a known “clipping” problem. That usually occurs when your model is located really far from the origin. Is that the case? Does the problem occur in all the time, or just in certain scenes? Could you repost the image from a different vantage point with the axis…[Read more]

That’s not what I was thinking of, but I’m sure there are lots of similar examples of working directly with the end users. That’s the planning model that Project for Public Spaces (http://www.pps.org) uses in all their work. For that matter, I’ve master planned a park with the help of 5th & 6th graders at a neighboring school. LAM didn’t come interview…[Read more]

What I’m about to suggest may lead you off in a totally wrong direction given your situation, so be careful, but you should check out the resources at Architecture for Humanity. Cameron Sinclair also has a book called Design Like You Give a Damn. Great book, incidentally. While the end users described in these works are largely political and…[Read more]

I believe the terms are interchangeable. I have a purple one, but can’t seem to find it right now so I don’t know what it says. I’m not so sure about “any blue pencil” not printing though. I remember there being something different about the lead in non-repro pencils…at least I recall a discussion on this topic from a studio professor once.

You need to be certain that it’s a non-reproducible blue pencil. The rules are very explicit about the use of color on the vignettes, and I have heard that they do check to verify if the color is non-printing.

Good point.

Agreed. I think this is part of “paying your dues.” I’m fairly certain I bought more expensive books when I was in school and had virtually no income.

Henry, thank you for asking. Now I’m torn, as that is just long enough to make me want the current edition now, yet close enough that it’s tempting to wait for the update. Maybe I need to get the current edition, and use it to make so much money in the next 13 months that the cost of the new edition will be pocket change. Ha! 🙂
I’m not sure that…[Read more]

Since they dropped the BLA, I’m not sure what the new requirement for internship/study abroad is. If the requirement is the same then I guess they have an extra year to find that company to hire them for a summer. I heard from someone in the Dean’s office a few weeks ago that Design Expo was way down in the number of firms hiring…not surprising,…[Read more]

I was certainly paid while I interned. And so were 95-100% of my classmates, even the ones working in quasi-public/public institutions. We also all got academic credit while we were working. Now maybe that’s unusual; maybe my college program was just awesome; maybe that doesn’t happen as often now that the industry is where it is. Regardless, my…[Read more]

Good suggestions here. I think the best advice I got when preparing/stressing for C was from my wife, who is not a designer, btw. She told me to “pack the suitcase.” When you’re looking at a problem, put all the big stuff on the paper first and then add the smaller elements. It eliminated a lot of stress for me just knowing that that was going to…[Read more]

It sounds like you want the photomatch view without the photo showing. Is that correct? Are you using SU8? Open the Styles window and click on Modelling Settings (the last icon). At the bottom there are toggles for the match photo background.

Dave, it might be helpful if you could describe more specifically what you’re trying to do, because I’m not sure I understand your question. The purpose of Photomatch is to move the camera so it sets the view of the model to align to a photo you are trying to match. Can you not use scenes to switch back and forth between the different views?…[Read more]

Hey Jeffrey. I’m sorry that this section has been so frustrating for you. Hopefully you can find some strategies here that will help. I did find the topics covered and the way questions were worded to be pretty bizarre. Thankfully I passed, but if I had to take it again, I would download the test description from CLARB and go point-by-point…[Read more]

Where did you find the 80% figure? I find that hard to believe, but would love to be wrong. I do understand that 3D and oblique are different. I was simply saying that Google offers both, though perhaps not to the geographical extent of Pictometry.
