interlibrary loan! Your local library can usually get any of the books from a university library. It only costs a couple of dollars for shipping, but you only get them for a month or so, so you need to plan ahead!

i’m just starting this testing process myself….any and all material suggestios, pass alongs would be greatly appreciated!!!
I’ve heard good and bad things about both the flashcards and the ppi materials…..i think it doesn’t help that the materials themselves may be getting outdated a bit, and the fluctuation of testing questions….

If you’re with your kids then you should check out Valkenburg’s Tear Drop Park. Went there on a landscape trip in college and the slides were SW-EET. Parents were scrambling to grab their children as full grown men (aka over served landscape students) took over the playground for a half hour. Good times. Hudson River Park was pretty cool as well.

The Dubai Fountain, by the way…

For sheer power and size, I’d go for the Dubai Fountain. It’s akin to three Bellagios side by side. And you can feel the throb (or is it a boom) every time it shoots its highest pulse/stream. A plus due to its location too (Burj Khalifa, Old Town Burj Dubai…er, Khalifa, and the Dubai Mall).
For sheer interactivity, Lawrence Halprin’s Ira Keller…[Read more]

Definitely Paley Plaza. Zion did the island that the statue of liberty is on also, it is quite nice. plus that boat ride isn’t bad. Any of M Paul Freidberg’s stuff you can get to.

Go to Battery Park City (near the old WTC). You’ll be right near the water (Hudson River) and there is a very lengthy promenade. There are numerous little parks. In the area is the Irish famine site and Teardop Park.

One of my favorites is Paley Park on E. 53rd St. Small, easy to walk right by and miss. A nice place to sit down and get away from the hustle and bustle for a bit. Have a snack and listen to the water. Designed by Zion and Breen and built in the 1960s.

Also in Battery Park City and very close to the Potato Famine memorial (which is pretty cool) is Teardrop Park (Van Valkenberg) and has play features for kids. If you only have a few hours you might focus on Central Park or the High Line.. you can easily spend hours at either.

I grew up in the Philly area, and I’ve seen the ones flanking the staircase working, and the one in front in the middle of the oval. I really don’t recall a fountain at the top of the steps. I’m gonna Google some photos!

I always liked the parks and promenade along Battery Park City for more contemporary LA work and there are some cool memorials, like the one for the Irish Potato Famine. The area is more kid-friendly too, with playgrounds, fewer sketchy characters.

I’m a pretty big fan of Halprins ‘fountains’/water features. Too bad we really cant design places like those anymore thanks to initiatives like CPTED…d’oh!..forgot this is a fountains discussion.

You’re correct, Philip. Everything we’ve heard is that pervious needs to be swept and/ or vacuumed once or twice a year. There shouldn’t be any issues with sedimentation filling the entire cross section as fines are typically caught in the gravel pores between pavers and don’t migrate downwards.

FYI Illinois is a stickler, you can’t transfer test scores into the state, you either have to take the test in Illinois or be licensed entirely in another state and transfer over the license. In a state fraught with fraud, I don’t blame them for being suspicious…

I’ve been there many times over the past decade (I don’t live there), and have never seen them working. The urns below the museum, yes, the fountains on the stairs no. They had always been drained. Maybe they were just off for the day. I’m going up there on Saturday, I’ll have to drive by and look!
