You really can’t answer this question based on type of work. You will have a never ending discussion (which is good) if you try and define “Architect” v “Designer” merely based on the work you do. I would say your answer comes down to, like many professions the education that has been recieved and based on that education the testing that you take…[Read more]

I don’t know of many landscape designers doing 60 to 600 acre masterplaned communities, I don’t see many LD’s doing urban plazas, or freeways, or golf courses, or zoos, or regional parks, etc. Landscape design seems to be irrigation, planting, some hardscape work, boulders, gravel, wood decking, gazebo, mostly at a residential scale. In California…[Read more]

I think for the Landscape/Landscape Architecture field SketchUp is the most common software for 3D. A lot of people then you add-on or rendering software to enhance there SU model (Piranesi, Vue, 3D Studio Viz, Podium, etc.). Just as AutoCAD is overkill for landscape design many 3D software platforms can be overkill for landscape design, thus the…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years, 1 month agoI took both C and E a second time in December and failed, was so confident on section C that I couldn’t figure out what went wrong. I’m applying for IL license so I can’t see my redlines, my only bit of hope is that the 6 part scoring system showed me passing 4 out of 6 sections, but seeing the incomplete on the letter wasn’t encouraging. I wonder…[Read more]

L.A.R.E. – ANYTHING GOES 16 years, 1 month agoGreetings from Albuquerque, Naomi! Your anecdote got me in a sensitive place, too. I should think by now you ARE a landscape architect, whatever the law says. E is annoying but you will get through it and then you can write articles–from the point of view of a Registered LA–about why therapeutic landscape designers need certain skills and…[Read more]

Ah, that changes things then. I suppose I should have looked at your profile before I answered. 🙂
But this represents exactly what I was talking about. SolidWorks is an ideal program for what you guys do for precisely the things you mention – materials selection, testing, and analysis. Inventor is one of their main competitors. But for me as a…[Read more]

I thought that SolidWorks was pretty much just used by engineers? Max, maya, sketchup are much more common.

They will come around because the question will no longer be about recruiting new members. It will be about keeping those that they have. I think they’ll be a little slow coming around because of the identity crisis that I think they have. They need to remember that development is what makes all of the “good things” possible.

3d max and Sketchup. I would definitely do them for Vectorworks as well. But you might check into what type of file is compatible with what. I’m fairly certain that of you model for 3d Max, you could use the same file for AutoCAD as well as Revit, as the information is designed to move back and forth between all three. Vectorworks may be able to…[Read more]

Jason,
Is there a standard 3D software you use at your company? Is there a specific program that manufacturers can use to incoporate their models (site furniture) into landscape designs? We currently have our product library available in SketchUp and are contemplating making them available in Vectorworks as well as Revit if the demand is there.

3D Studio/Max is also fairly promenint, as it is owned an has pretty direct software tie-in with AutoDesk (AutoCAD). Of course, Revit also comes to mind. Some firms also use Rhino. Solidworks seems to be geared towards the manufacturing industries, I am assuming because of easy export to CNC machinery or rapid prototyping equipment.

At Maglin, we use SolidWorks for product design (benches, trash containers, bollards, bike racks, etc.). Our present requirement is that a software be applicable to both the initial concept development and creative design process and then easily and accurately translate into an engineering capacity for manufacturing. It is important that…[Read more]

He may also be able to call himself a landscape architect if he is working under the supervision of another licensed landscape architect. Some firms call that Landscape Architect In Training other firms just call it junior landscape architect.

Totally agree. Exclusion is akin to MD’s demanding that RN’s or medtechs not practice because they don’t have PhD educations.

So the elephant in the room is “What do we do about it?” How sacred of a cow is ASLA? Are professional membership organizations obsolete? It a network like this sustainable in the long term? Is this too hot of an item to post as its own thread?
