Jay,
I have fortunately still been employed with the same company. I have had to take a reduction in pay, but most everyone I know that has kept their current jobs has had to do the same thing. I am just grateful to still be employed at this point.Hope that helps.

Would love to go. In fact have always wanted to go. But being laid off three times the past two years due to lack of work, has killed me financially.

May I ask where you found employment? What city, kind of firm, etc? No specific companies names or anything like that. I’m just curious where there are opportunities

NO!!!!
Was laid off in February 2008. Found another job in June 2008. Laid off again (due to lack of work) November 2008. Went back to work with the same company under a temporary contract starting November 2009 and was laid off AGAIN in Februrary 2010.
Needless to say the last two years have been very very difficult. Feeling quite disallusioned…[Read more]

Oh dear! Does no-one read my stuff? Put in temporary benches where you can to grow fenced off living ones nearby and the same with shelters.
When you buy friies and eat them walking down the street you want a bin in view when you finish. So you eat fries walking down the street and see where you are when you are finished. With benches folk want…[Read more]

Look for the various “Intellicad” programs that are out there. They are Autocad clones which are licensed by a consortium and customized by the individual companies such as Progecad, Briscnet, and several others. You should be able to get a fairly complete clone for about $400.

I learned thru reading a Mastering AutoCAD book as well. However, the problems and guides that come in the attached CD require AutoCAD to work thru. And, even the most watered down versions of CAD (AutoCAD LT) is about $1000 dollars.
The bargain basement way to do it, would be to buy a used book and download the free trial of AutoCAD and do as…[Read more]

I went back to school in ’94 because of CAD (dropped out in ’83 because I could not draw well enough), so I know where you are coming from. I had not even used a computer when I went back.
Fortunately they had a great Autocad class where they taught from a “process oriented” perspective rather than a “product oriented”. The book that we used was…[Read more]

Yes – laid off oct. 2008 – started own design business (not licensed yet) July 2009 – pretty steady 1/4 time work through January which isn’t too bad for just starting out, but I do have to look for projects within a 300-mile radius or so (the west is BIG!)

Jay,
Yes, no change in hours, no change in pay, no change in benefits. I’m in a civil engineering office, though. Eight people including two office staff and two survey solo field crew people in the company. We did lay off an office staff person and a septic design/soil evaluator person a year ago. We had a ups and downs on the work load – looks…[Read more]

To all those who are saying ‘yes’…….does this mean you never lost your job during the recession, or that you have found a new job in the profession during the recession? Just curious, as these are two entirely different scenarios.

I think you might be putting too much weight on the DesignIntelligence rankings. I’ve seen schools float up and down the rankings for years. I would suggest actually visiting the school and seeing the quality of the student work as well as speaking with the professors to see if their program is right for your needs. I’m applying for the fall of…[Read more]
