Hey Laura,
Thanks for the link! Yeah, that’s all I have been able to figure out- DesignIntelligence’s top 10. But I want like top 25 or 50, so all the schools I applied to will appear on the list, hopefully, so I can rank them accordingly.
I have applied to MLA programs at:
-LSU (accepted)
-Kansas State (awaiting)
-Texas A&M…[Read more] -

We are doing a design competition at this years LaBash in Las Vegas. It will be more like a charette because of the short time frame, but should still be pretty cool.

This year Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens opened the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses, designed by Herb Schaal at EDAW in Fort Collins, CO (now AECOM). It’s an amazing place… Here’s some images: http://www.mainegardens.org/discover/explore-the-gardens/lerner-garden-of-the-five-senses
If you’re interested, I’ve got many more photographs taken this year.

Just to add I’m in Florida and have been out of work since December of 2008, and that was working overseas in Australia for a landscape architecture / land planning company out there. I was on a one year work and holiday visa and unfortunately when that ended in April of ’09 I had to return to the country. My old employer in South Florida would…[Read more]

Middle East Landscape 16 years, 1 month agoGreetings–
While I do not live in the middle east I am working on projects in Qatar and Abu Dhabi and am trying to get a sense of how to proceed in a meaningful way. I’ve worked abroad before and have had positive and negative experiences with trying to be as ‘local’ as possible. So far my impression of Qatar is to be sensitive to the climate…[Read more]

LEED in Landscape Architecture 16 years, 1 month agoJust sat for the GA Exam and passed on the first attempt. It’s definitely distilled down from the old version of the exams. From my perspective the LEED GA is a great credential for LAs to have the distinction, but without having to go through the specialty portions that are beyond our typical work. Sustainable Sites is where I’m placing my emphasis.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 16 years, 1 month agoMy civil engineer handed me a brochure on the Filterra Bioretention System which appears to be a vault, filled with gravel, sand and a little peat moss that takes in and filters storm water. The vault is topped with a tree grate where you plant a plant from the recommended list provided by Filterra. Has anyone used this system? They recommend that…[Read more]

NO! 6 months. I am living in an area with 14% unemployment, western North Carolina. The engineering firm I used to work for just bought three new vehicles, including a second one for the office head, but have cut the land planning division from 5 people to 2 and one of them is on a reduced week. Needless to say, the final two are out trying to…[Read more]

NO. I’ve been out of the profession for almost two years from this recession. I’m considering going back to school to leave the field, or at least to have another source of income. It’s bad here in Florida. But it seems to be that way everywhere. I’m normally optimistic, but this recession has hurt. I have bills to pay and just want some stability.

This doesn’t relate directly to the Zinco system you’re talking about, but some of the best research on the energy/heat conservation aspect of green roofs has come out of the Canadian National Research Council.
These two articles in particular might be…[Read more] -

See the work of Joan Nassauer and the CIty of Maplewood MN. There was an article on them a couple of issues back in LAM. That is more suburban (older suburbs, though, so more dense than suburbs are now) – no curb and gutter had been installed yet so they have been able to utilize existing draininage ditches a bit.
One cool project is in…[Read more] -

Thanks I will make sure to look through your photos.
Since our installation our raingarden has apparently received several large storm events with the berm holding up and the system draining well. I will certainly be watching it over time to see its performance. The raingarden is currently under 4 ft of snow, so the spring may be a good time to…[Read more]

Yes, thankfully. Chatting to other professionals in the built environment field – we are all at the same point where we have pretty much exhausted whatever was on the table when the bubble burst, and we have hung on by our fingernails since then, but that work is more or less all gone. Despite the talk of things improving, I think we will see more…[Read more]

There are photos of the projects in my folio here on land8lounge. Let me know if I have to ‘friend’ you to look at them – I don’t think you have to. All of the construction details are with the firm I was working for during this project….I don’t have any pics of the mitigated wetlands though, only the stormwater wetlands.
