Kevin, thanks for bringing this up! I am curious, as well…
I was looking at pictures last night and was astounded by the devastation.

Interesting thread everyone! I know MD’s who lie about what they do when socializing so they don’t have to look down other peoples throats at a cocktail party. I also know a prominent attorney in the public sector that consistently gets asked to help waive peoples parking tickets. It happens to everyone. Be proud of what you do, explain it to an…[Read more]

Uprzejmie proszę o uświadomienie grupy PLA w zamian za tolerowanie linków o treści jak poniżej 🙂 Pozdrawiam

I have also run into this issue and had to stress with clients that in some cases delays in permitting can end up costing as much or even more than just doing something right the first time. Most clients are very receptive to cost benefit arguments when presented from a professionally objective point of view. At the end of the day, the client did…[Read more]

I see a big difference between client dictation and professional objectivity. Objectivity does not silence the practitioner from moving a project to follow his own values. It is not a black or white choice. It is continuing to provide service when the client is not moved very far in that direction rather than not making any effort to move…[Read more]

I have been under the assumption that land architecture is both an art + science. There should be a balance of both scientific objectivity in practice and craft as well as a good portion of artisitic subjectivity and integrity. Granted, the latter in most cases probably won’t win you a clients allegience.
I’ve seen an array of different business…[Read more]

I don’t consider NU a replacement for metropolitan area. It’s an answer to suburban sprawl, not urban infill.
Are you talking about urban growth boundaries? If that’s the case I can attest to that not really working for areas like the Colorado Front Range. GMA’s still allow one town to grow to the edge of the next rural community.

It’s funny that in my transition from industrial design to landscape architecture I found the same issue. What’s in a name? Industrial designers were always lamenting being mistaken for factory designers. I think that my cocktail party persona must have been closer to Rosie the Riveter than any hipster on HGTV.
Now I’m asked if I’m a “Landsc…[Read more]

No, I’m sorry I don’t think that’s true.

well, alec, based upon the responses to the above question, there is sure to be some whole-hearted discussion (or bitter debate) over the mag’s content…it sounds good to me. tell me more about it over some beers?

With regards to the LARE, it’s important to recognize a few “facts of life” with regard to the profession and the exam.
1. Licensing authorities are set up for one reason: to protect the public from individuals doing stuff they shouldn’t be doing…either through malfeasance or lack of competence. The exam reflects that reality.
2. Landscape…[Read more]

I hate new urbanism (big surprise..) It is garbage..Planning needs to occur at a much more general scale – draw the line on the urban center density, and stop there for new villages – go up,not out! within that core. And within that core, focus on banishing the car. The small scale interests of new urbanism drive me crazy – picket fences!! gack!!…[Read more]

Golf Course Architecture & Design 16 years, 3 months agoRyan, to answer your question from November, I am an avid golfer with a single digit handicap. I was drawn to golf design because I had a love for the game, then developed a love for the golf design industry and golf architecture. Something romantic about the whole industry to me.
I think you have to be a good stick in order to be respected in…[Read more]

Ben-
Feel free to call me an idiot if you feel so inclined..I don’t mind. I’m trying to get a good, heated discussion going on urban planning. I played this topic on an architecture forum and it’s gone on and on, really good discussion, so I was hoping to plant the seed here and get a more focused landscape perspective.
As much as I enjoyed a…[Read more]

Golf Course Architecture & Design 16 years, 3 months agoFix, repair or replace all those hardscape areas used for erosion control such as in the photo above. Try a vegetatable solution that is a permanent repair to many erosion issues. With the value of 1sq ft of golf course being as high as it is it is shame for erosion to eat it up. Deltalok USA Ecology Units will provide a permanent vegetatable solution.

Seems we are back to the age old argument that someone WILL be designing new housing, so it might as well be us- which makes sense. This also gets back to choice and variety- some people are set on living in the ‘burbs, some prefer dense urban areas. Ideally we can help provide well though out options for both, and ideally the American mindset…[Read more]

I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of interest in the project. Over 30 emails, and not all Land8Lounge members.
I have also, admittedly, been overwhelmed. I am still receiving inquiries, (as recently as 30 minutes ago as a matter of fact), and am hesitant to pull the plug on submissions today. I…[Read more] - Load More
